I was content with a glance instead of union,

Yet the coquettish one did not grant even that.

Unattainable, as though her eyes held

The sword of death, its blades honed.

Pray, turn the arrows of your glance away from me,

So the eye may graze in beauty's garden.

    فما هذا النفار على التوالي

    O my slayer, the slave has done no wrong;

    Why, then, this unceasing aversion?

Is there not one glance, some day in this lifetime?

Have they not said that looking back is the gazelle's way?

By the sacred lives laid upon your neck,

And the lawful magic in your eyes,

I have forgotten home and my life,

Yet I have not forgotten my love for you.

My tormentress, is there no limit to displeasure?

Is not favor the best of deeds?

I wonder: has the night of estrangement no dawn?

And what is my sin but keeping vigil through the nights?

She answers, her lips parting in a proud smile:

“Leave complaints to the ladies of curtained chambers.

Are you not the one who proudly proclaims,

‘And the sweetest love is love denied union’?”

O my enchantress, I strayed, but I have been guided

By beauty's prophet after my straying.

And I have come to say, with the Lord as witness:

“And the sweetest love is love freely attained.”
