وكلand every عنىhardship يرضيpleases الحبيبthe beloved يسيرُeasy
I journey, while my heart is captive to love.
I am captive, and my heart captive of love
And every hardship that pleases the beloved is easy.
And all my care that pleases the beloved is easy

ولمand has not يبدappeared منيfrom me فيin الغرامlove فتورُwaning ardor
Why does she, the wearer of the sash, reproach me,
So why does she of graceful veil blame me
When I have shown no waning of love?
When no coolness in love from me appeared?
وماand not أناI منone who يقوىis strong enough علىfor حملbearing جورهاher cruelty

I am not one strong enough to bear her cruelty,
I cannot bear her tyranny,
Even if my heart were Radwa and Thabir.
And even if the solace of my soul and pride

I wipe away the streaming tears whenever she is mentioned,
Restrain, restrain the tears if her mention passes
And to me, all humankind goes about mentioning her.
And at her mention people walk

So if one day they mention Su'ad and Zaynab,
So if they mentioned a day, Saad and Zainab
I imagine Layla gesturing in greeting.
Reckon my night bids farewell

As though all beings were embodied in her,
As if all creatures in her persona
And in your name, O Layla, all affairs revolve.
And by your name, O Laila, things revolve

Leave me to myself, my reproachers—may you not be spared!
Leave me and my affairs, O critics
For I am patient under love's abasement.
For I am patient with the humiliation of love

The censurer's rejection, and my critic's, did not hurt me
I was not saddened by the estrangement of censurers
As much as a friend's saying that I am an ill omen,
Like the words of a friend that I am a warner

And Time's turning its face away from me, as though I
And the turning of fate from me as if I
Had killed a son of his, or were wronging him.
Killed its son for it or have dues

Yet I am not one to fear him; let him be my adversary.
So I am not one who fears, leave my opponent
And no wall stands between us until the Resurrection.
And nothing between us until the resurrection is a wall

And do I fear one day his harm and violence?
When Jawdat, my lord the minister, is my champion?
When my patron the minister is a supporter

A minister whose rank rose above the highest
And beneath his banner the finest men march.
And under his banner the best walk

If he moved his right hand one day in earnest
Lines of lawful magic shine forth.
The scripts of lawful magic shine from the dawn

A leader—you see his breast as a treasury of knowledge,
Before you see the treasure of knowledge his chest
With no watcher in it, and no guard.
With no observation in it and no guard

He orders a realm, and is well qualified to do so.

A discerning man, he sees Time's future as present,
An expert who sees the future present
Thus do men's wonders come to pass.
Thus the miracles of men come to pass

If our pens do not excel in praising him
Then his history journeys through East and West.
Then his history in the horizons flows

Even if I were all tongues and mouths.

My patron, I have saddled my steed
At your gate; be gracious, for the noble are forgiving.
At your door, so pardon, and the generous forgives
