sleepless with weeping, lamentation, and pain?

Why does she complain? Has she been caught in the snare of the

hunter, or by the talon of eagles and vultures?

By God, O ring-necked one, you have stirred my sorrow.

Have you awakened to the loss of companions and attendants?

Or has a raven struck you with news of a brother's death,

as it struck me, so that my tears poured forth with my blood?

Yes, and with it we have lost all blessings.

Woe to the day when the death announcement reached us,

and its sun, at midmorning, was driven into nothingness.

Woe to the day when the death announcement reached us,

with the heart aflame and the eye in darkness.

He announced the death and cried: ‘Sons of al-Naqqash, your peerless one

has died; pour forth lamentation and pain.’

Woe to those tidings! Woe to the one who spoke them!

If only he had been afflicted with inarticulacy and muteness!

I called Maroun, my inward parts in pain,

and my eyelid sleepless, my heart ablaze.

Never had I known you, O Maroun, to leave us

with even the slightest sorrow and pain befalling us.

And now we call you, but no one answers us,

as though the sight of you were tangled fragments of a dream.

Why, O my heart's desire, are your limbs lifeless,

your eye closed and your ear deaf?

    You accustomed me to my call being answered at once;

so take my hand, my brother; my resolve has failed.

I weep for you alone as long as a ring-necked dove laments,

but I am not alone in weeping tears mingled with blood for you.

    أنَّى تصاب النجوم الزهر بالعدمِ

    With Beirut, we mourn you, O you who are its flower;

how can the radiant stars be struck by extinction?

the embroiderer of its mantle in the most eloquent words.

And sorrow and tears are folded up and unfolded

by verse and prose, like paper and pen.

a precious treasure to spur the discerning student!

    You fashioned within it ornamented plays;

in the finery of jest, earnestness came bearing wise sayings.

But you withheld plays of sorrow

only to enact them in your own eminent person:

Woe to that trade, whose wares found a market

only by losing you, O my cash and my advance payment!

Yet your memory lives whenever they mention

anything of learning or anything of wisdom.

‘Patience, my brother, with God's decree for the nations.

And entrust the matter to the Lord; for with good

submission, one is wronged in neither abode.
