ناديت مذ عاد سؤلي منتهى الأملِ

طرطوسُ لا ناقتي فيها ولا جملي

طرطوسُ لا ناقتي فيها ولا جملي

I cried out when my heart’s desire returned—the height of hope:

I called out when my question returned, the utmost of hope

Tartus, neither my she-camel nor my male camel is there.

Tartus, where I have no she-camel nor camel

عوداً كبدرٍ تولاه الخسوف لذا

عوداً كبدرٍ تولاه الخسوف لذا

آهاً أرخت سناه غير مكتملِ

آهاً أرخت سناه غير مكتملِ

A return like a full moon overtaken by eclipse; therefore,

A full moon eclipsed, so it leaned

Alas! I recorded the date: “Its radiance is incomplete.”

Alas, it let down its brilliance unfinished
