لاdoes not يشتكيcomplain of آلهمsorrow منwhoever باللهin God فيهِin him رجاhope
إذfor كلُّevery شيءٍthing بإذنٍby permission منهُfrom Him قدhas خرجاcome forth
Whoever has hope in God does not complain of sorrow.
None who hope in God should complain of fate's blows.
For everything has come forth by permission from Him.
All things emerge by leave of Him, as everyone knows.
فقلso say لمنto whoever عنaway from صراطthe path الحقthe truth قدhas عرجاturned aside
ياO مشتكيyou who complain of آلهمsorrow دعهُleave it وانتظرand await فرجاrelief
So say to whoever has strayed from the path of truth:
Say to whoever has swerved from the path of what's right:
O you who complain of sorrow, leave it and await relief
"Do not complain of your woes; wait hopefully for light
منfrom الإلهGod المعزّيthe comforter of كلَّevery محزونِgrieving person
وضعand place رجاءكyour hope بالمولىin the Lord وكنand be أمناًsecure
From God, who comforts all who grieve.
From God the Comforter of every woeful soul."
And place your hope in the Lord, and be secure.
Put your hope in the Master; be confident and whole.
وخذand take وسيطاًa mediator ولكنand yet لاnot تكنbe خشناharsh
وكدّand toil واسعَand strive ففيfor in المسعىstriving بلوغattainment of مناwishes
And take a mediator, but do not be harsh.
Take mediation, but do not rashly play the fool.
And toil and strive, for striving brings the fulfillment of wishes.
Strive and range widely, for reaching any goal
وكنand be صبوراًpatient حكيماًwise عاتقاًnoble فطناdiscerning
ودارand adapt to وقتكyour times منfrom حينٍa moment إلىto حينِa moment
And be patient, wise, noble, and discerning.
Calls for wisdom, patience, sharpness, self-control.
And adapt to your times, from moment to moment.
Let your time pass nicely from now to then.
إنif خابfails مسعاكyour endeavor لاdo not تنسبهُascribe it للبشرِto human beings
بلrather قُلْsay منfrom اللّهGod لكنbut كنbe علىon حذرِguard
If your endeavor fails, do not ascribe it to human beings.
If your endeavor fails, do not blame it on men;
Rather, say, 'It is from God,' but remain on your guard.
Rather say, "From God," but remain on your guard.
وجددand renew العزمَresolve أنif أمسيتyou enter evening فيin ضجرِvexation
ولاand do not تعاندbe obstinate إذاif أصبحتyou enter morning فيin كدرِdistress
And renew your resolve if evening finds you vexed.
If bitterness holds you, renew your purpose hard.
And do not be obstinate if morning finds you troubled.
Do not grow stubborn when anguish grips you tight.
إنindeed العنادobstinacy لكفرsurely unbelief عندin the eyes of ذيone possessing الدينِfaith
منwhoever يخزنhoards آلهمsorrow أنthat الموتdeath غلَّتهُhis harvest
Obstinacy is surely unbelief in the eyes of one who has faith.
Stubbornness is near infidelity outright.
For whoever hoards sorrow, death is his harvest.
Let not woes make you forget that death will come.
وربماand perhaps غايةthe utmost الخسرانloss تجرتهُhis trade
فروّضso discipline الروحthe spirit ماnot دنياكyour earthly life غايتهُits goal
And perhaps his trade is utter ruin.
Maybe total loss will be your eventual sum.
So discipline the spirit: your earthly life is not its goal.
Ready your soul; this world was never your home.
ودارِand treat gently جسمكyour body ماnot الفولاذsteel جبلتهُits constitution
فإنماfor only أنتyou منof ماءٍwater وطينِand clay
And treat your body gently: it is not fashioned from steel.
Your body's soil, not steel, was its raw material.
For you are made of nothing but water and clay.
You are only water and clay in the end.
