A person's life in this world is a dream,

Whether the stay is long or short.

Most of it, even when it treats you kindly, is distress,

And in the very moment of its clarity, gloom returns.

Misery forever stands before its bliss,

And dreadful death bars that bliss from enduring.

Which a sword approaches to sever.

Rather, the wonder is that humankind lives.

More wondrous still is a deeply ignorant person

Who goes about as though death were prevented.

Be gentle, O night traveler, with your soul:

It was not created to be crushed by worldly goods.

    فما دار الشقاء لها مقامُ

    God fashioned it as a bride for Paradise;

The abode of misery is no dwelling for it.

So do not bind your heart to its misery,

And let neither a lovely maiden nor food distract you.

    The hands of death wronged him grievously;

I had never known Salim to suffer such wrong.

Was he a green branch, felled and shattered

By a yellow wind bearing death?

I lament him: 'O full moon!' Yet

    Dust veils him, not clouds.

In the market of the West, darkness overtook him [reading uncertain].

As the noble have endured adversity.

    Your loss, by my father's life, is hard to bear;

Therefore words of consolation are hard to find.

God decreed this; nothing can turn it back—

    Almsgiving, prayer, or fasting,

A reed pen, defense, or deception,

    A sword, arrows, or combat.

You choke on tears, not on water,

And turn away whenever food appears.

It seems to me that you heed no advice,

Though far be it that reproach should come upon you.

Why am I offering you the best counsel,

When you are our teacher and leader?

Remember: does lamentation help at all?

Can bones come alive through wailing?

Can we hope for the deliverance of those we have lost

When a collar or veil is torn?
