Is it your mouth, or lightning that appeared, or the full moon's glow?

Your brow, or a light that recited the chapter of Dawn?

And your neck, or morning lights grown solid,

With two necklaces of rain-beads hung upon them?

From the eye—nay, from the gaze of imagination and thought.

Oryx eyes between Rusafa and the bridge!

Appearing atop the breasts' caskets upon the chest?

Like a surah of ants that crawled, hastening toward the raindrops.

My soul for a plant that shone in a garden of flowers!

I enjoyed it, by God, yet without wrongdoing.

From loved ones, by God—and this is chaste love.

And there was no talebearer but the full moon's eye.

And do not leave me until my life's end.

I fear that, if the wait grows long, I may incline toward unbelief.
