What shall I say, when my sin is bottomless?

My speech recounts it for me from the depths of my mouth.

Yet I cry out like one making an exception to a commitment:

I have sinned; lamentation has now become an obligation of mine.

Leave me a little while, so I may weep over my sorrow,

before departing for the land of death and darkness.

What, then, do you seek from a fugitive sinner

save weeping and the crushing of the heart by remorse?

This is the oil, O you who gladly consented

to its being poured upon the feet long ago.

For it permits hope of pardon; then through it

the conscience grows calm, and the fruit of blessings is reaped.

and the soul escapes God's wrath, and indeed

God has, however, accepted the kiss of peace.

In it is found refuge from the face of one enraged,

and in it a wrongdoer's burden is truly washed away.

O friend, if you seek to purify the soul from the stain of

sins, lament, weep, and mourn in the gloom of darkness.

If justice thunders, or its lightning flashes appear,

then respond in kind with tears that do not stream.

If our sin robs God of glory,

    the surest counsel is that it be restored through remorse;

or, if it has not been returned to Him beforehand in our world,

we shall return it when we return to the blaze.

Stand firm-footed in repentance for a day,

lest tomorrow you say, 'Alas for the foot's stumble!'

God does not despise a heart melting with sorrow,

if indeed it has come to end suffering through pain.
