إنindeed الملامةَcensure للصنيعِfor the deed ولائماًand a reprover
إن الملامةَ للصنيعِ ولائماً
منthan مادحٍa praiser ومديحهِand his praise لكَto you أَنفعُmore useful
من مادحٍ ومديحهِ لكَ أَنفعُ
Indeed, censure of a deed and a reprover
Blame for what you've done, not who reproaches,
are more useful to you than a praiser and his praise.
Brings benefit, though they praise and sing your fame.
فالمدحُfor praise كمhow often رفَعَraised العقولminds تصلُّفاًin conceit
فالمدحُ كم رفَعَ العقول تصلُّفاً
لكنهاbut they بالذَمّthrough censure هلdo? تَتَرفَّعُgrow haughty
لكنها بالذَمّ هل تَتَرفَّعُ
For how often praise has lifted minds into conceit!
For praise can make proud hearts yet more pretentious,
Yet do they grow haughty under censure?
But blame may humble pride however grandiose.
واذاand if تُهِمتَyou are accused بخَلَّةٍof a fault لمdid not تَجنِهاcommit it
واذا تُهِمتَ بخَلَّةٍ لم تَجنِها
رِفقاًbe gentle ففيكَfor within you لهاfor it رِفاقٌcompanions أَشنَعُuglier
رِفقاً ففيكَ لها رِفاقٌ أَشنَعُ
And if you are accused of a fault you did not commit,
If you're accused of stinginess you don't own,
Be gentle, for within you it has uglier companions.
Forbear - though faults in you there may be worse.
