عِشاءٌan evening أَطفَلَتdrew near sunset فيهِin it ذُكاءُDhuka, the sun
An evening in which Dhuka, the sun, drew toward sunset.
A night whose brilliance sparkled,
An evening in which Dhuka, the sun, drew toward sunset.
A night whose brilliance sparkled,

An unbidden guest of the fires lodged in a heart
Whose guest fires kindled a heart,
whose brilliance has a blaze within souls.
Its brilliance sparked souls for it is brilliance,

It offered hospitality, and the heart sought it, yet
And drew near so the heart hosted it but
its demand for hospitality pressed relentlessly upon the breast.
Its persistence on sorrows was more intense,

The knives of bereavement made us old,
An age of misery made us brilliant,
so how strange, when wit has failed!
So wondrously brilliance has failed.

The tongue has indeed fallen short: no expression remains;
Eloquence is too short, no more clarity,
and expression is constrained: no wit remains.
Eloquence has ended, no more brilliance.

Joy slipped away from us and departed,
Bliss has left us and sorrow appears,
while grief and tidings of death spent the night among us.
Grief stays in us and so does lament.

The sun of day and the sun of a season faded
The suns of day and season set together,
together, and misery murdered their light.
Affliction assassinated their light.

At night the full moon was veiled in the dark of the moon,
The full moon was veiled in concealment at night,
so light vanished, and radiance was hidden.
Light is gone and radiance is hidden.

We never thought the two moons' radiance would disappear
O two moons, we know nothing is hidden from you,
or brightness set from our places of rising.
Splendour sets from our east forever.

We roamed in the shadows of a dark night,
wandering through it with no guidance.
Wandering with no guidance to lead us.

When that noble man vanished from us,
When the loss moved away from us,
lamentation appeared, and weeping was summoned.
Lament appeared and elegy was unleashed.

Tears mixed with blood streamed forth.

With every tear that fell down a cheek,

Was the blood of two brothers and then brotherhood.

So the eyelids are ulcerated and sleepless,
The eyelids have wounds and traces,
as though sword-blades had been sheathed in them.
As if in them laid sheathed swords.

In the entrails, there is inflammation and kindling,
like a hearthstone fired by the flames.
Like a furnace set ablaze by agony.

The pools of calamity flowed treacherously;
The misfortunes of calamities came treacherously,
they betrayed us, and goodwill deserted us.
They betrayed us so solace abandoned us.

We lost a sweet, delightful watering place,
It deprived us of a sweet, pleasant oasis,
and therefore thirst has never left us.
Therefore, thirst did not part from us.

A living gentleman modesty gave life,
while rain revived his petitioner's people.
And revived one who asked him for life.

Attained for us the most glorious glories.

If one as brilliant as him was hit with misfortune
like this, it would have become bent.
Like this, he would revolt and through it kneel down.

Consolation over a cherished man is hard indeed,
Consoling the brilliant became difficult,
and patience is hard when consolation is hard.
And patience was difficult when consoling was hard.

that excellence should trace its lineage to him.
To him belongs extolling of virtue.

Without any crookedness will he be wrapped.

a youth after whom youthful vigor dwindled.
After whom the chivalry of youths shrunk.

in phases around which suffering circles.
Circles with which ordeal turns.

دُهُ—its (completes preceding word) قَضَضٌsharp gravel ومَسلَكهُand its pathway شَقاءُmisery
For grief's ground is burning sand, and its resting place—
The stomping ground of sorrow is cinders and its
—is sharp gravel, and its pathway misery.
Repast is vexation and its path misery.
ومَفؤُودوهُand those it strikes in the heart ليسَthere is no لهمfor them نجاحٌsuccess

Those whose hearts it wounds find no success,
Those who lost it have no salvation,
and those it buries alive find no escape.
Those bereaved of it have no rescue.

By your life, grief's mountain pass is rugged ground,
By your life, the crevice of grief is deep grief
where exhaustion wears out even the expert guide.
Descent makes the respectable descend.

It persisted within souls without a break,
It connected in souls without disconnection
like a circle whose ending is a beginning.
Like a circle whose end is its beginning.
