    Youth's luxuriant shade has receded,

And from the bright expanse of gray hair a follower has come.

And what morning is not followed by evening?

And what spring is not followed by autumn?

    كذلكَ يَمضي تالدٌ وطريفُ

    In just this way time has passed and ended;

Thus the old and the new alike pass away.

The blackness of nights in the whiteness of their day—

Tales whose letters cannot be read.

My two friends, what ails people? One laughs,

While hundreds and thousands weep around him.

    تَساوَى خَسِيسٌ عِندهُ وشَرِيفُ

    Indeed, this age has launched an ignorant man's raid;

To it, the base and the noble are alike.

An affliction engulfing the face of the earth,

Like Noah's flood when it swept all around.

It has claws amid the livers of men,

That have sunk in; and in their necks are its swords.

How many healthy men have sickened in this world—and how many, and how many

Gathered throngs have scattered across the expanse of the lands!

And how many heads have been split by killers,

And how many noses have been rubbed in the dust before rulers!

It is parting: you know no path by which its envoys come,

So that you might escape; nor can caves save you from it.

And it enters the fortress gate though it is bolted shut,

And sees in darkness, however dense.

And I marvel how people have strayed from guidance,

As a blind man strays from the light of day.

When a youth sees a dead man, he says, 'What have I

to do with that? For death's herald is my ally.'

To you, Muhammad, a greeting is sent,

Gentle, conveyed to you by a gentle soul.

I hold you above ignorance, for you are sensible,

    Well-versed in time's decrees, discerning.

    ولكنَّ صبري في البَلاءِ ضَعيفُ

    I have lamented what you lament—the terror of its violence;

But my patience in affliction is weak.

And indeed, pebbles are heavy to the fretful,

And a massive smooth rock is light to the patient.
