هلdo you فيin يمينكَyour right hand مِيثاقٌa covenant منfrom الأجَلِthe appointed end
What use is seeking solace in hope in this world of yours?
What is the use of hoping in your world with hope
Do you hold a covenant from death in your right hand?
Do you have a covenant with the approaching death
إنif كُنتَyou are تعلَمُyou know أنَّthat النَّفسَthe self خادِعةٌdeceitful

فحَّبذاthen how excellent لوif قَرَنتَyou joined العِلمَknowledge بالعَملِwith action
If you know that the self is deceitful,
If you know the soul is deceptive
How good it would be, then, if you joined knowledge with action.
It would be best if you combined knowledge with action

Whoever does not know what will befall him tomorrow
Those who are ignorant of what will come upon them tomorrow
Asks yesterday about his earliest forebears.
Inquire yesterday about their first ancestors

Everyone is a traveler, poised for journeys,
Everyone travels at the pace of journeys
In the wake of one traveler, in the wake of another.
After a traveler, after a traveler

O seeker of the world's pleasure and its delight,
O you who seek the pleasures and joys of the world
What pleasure is there in life in this world amid dread?
What is the pleasure of living in the world with anxiety

No one closes an eye and then opens it
A person does not close then open his eyes
Except in fear of death, which closes the eyes.
Except upon the fear of a death that closes the eyelids
أمسىwas at evening الخليلُKhalil كغُصنِlike a branch of البانthe bān tree مُعتدِلاًupright
والصُّبحُand by morning صارَbecame هَشيماًdry, broken brushwood غيرَnot مُعتدِلِupright
At evening Khalil was upright as a branch of the bān tree,
The friend became like an erect myrrh branch
And by morning he was broken brushwood, no longer upright.
And the morning turned into irregular fragments
وباتَand he spent the night كالبدرِlike the full moon فيin إشراقِهِhis radiance فغَداthen by morning he became
فيin القبرِthe grave أخفَىmore hidden عنfrom الأبصارِsight منthan زُحَلِSaturn
And he spent the night radiant as the full moon; by morning he was
He was like the full moon in its radiance, but awoke
In the grave, more hidden from sight than Saturn.
In the grave, hidden from sights more than Saturn
قدalready سارَdeparted منfrom حِضْنِthe bosom of إبراهيمَIbrahim والدِهِhis father
وحلَّand he settled فيin حِضْنِthe bosom of إبراهيمَIbrahim بالعَجَلِin haste
He had left the bosom of Ibrahim, his father,
He went from the bosom of his father Abraham
And swiftly settled in Ibrahim's bosom.
And settled in the bosom of Abraham in haste
فكانso it was قدindeed طابَwas pleasant فيin الدَّارَينthe two abodes مَضجَعُهُhis resting place
إذfor كانَhe was فيin حِضنِthe bosom of إبراهيمَIbrahim لمdid not يَزَلِcease
Thus his resting place was pleasant in both abodes,
So his resting place was good in both abodes
For he never ceased to be in Ibrahim's bosom.
As he remained in the bosom of Abraham

أيَّامُهُhis days فَمَضىso he departed منby أقربِthe shortest السُّبُلِpaths
At the age of twenty-one, alas, came the end
At the age of twenty-one his days ended in sorrow
Of his days, and he departed by the shortest of paths.
So he passed by the nearest of paths
لمَّاwhen دعاcalled اللهُGod لبَّىhe answered صوتَهُHis voice عَجَلاًin haste
إذfor لمْnot يكنْhe was مِنamong ذويthose with الإهمالِnegligence والكَسَلِand laziness
When God called, he answered His voice in haste,
When God called him, he immediately obeyed His voice
For he was not among the negligent and the idle.
For he was not of those who neglect and are lazy

Sons of Musaddiya, may God bestow upon you
O tribe of Musaddiyah, God has granted you
Patience before the terror of this grievous calamity.
Patience over the horror of this momentous event
عَزُّواconsole المحابرَthe inkwells والأقلامَand the pens عنfor the loss of يدهِhis hand
كماjust as تُعَزُّونَyou console عنهُfor his loss خِدمَةَthe service of الدُّولِstates
Console the inkwells and the pens for the loss of his hand,
Excuse the pens and tablets from his hand
As you console the service of states for his loss.
As you excuse him from serving the state

Be, O his father, like Ibrahim when he freely offered
O father, be like Abraham when he generously offered
His son to his Lord upon that mountain.
His son to his Lord on that mountain

I wish with a soul from his beloved ones
Could be ransomed, as Isaac was ransomed with the lamb.
He were ransomed as Isaac was ransomed with a ram

We do not console you, O you who has no consolation
Yet if we keep silent, we stand in shame.
Though we are silent and stand in embarrassment

Indeed, when you make light of a mourner's grief,
When you console the bereaved, you increase his bereavement
It grows, so you are like one quenching fire with flames.
So you would be like extinguishing fire with flames

So excuse him for what you see from him and supplicate for him
To have patience, for it is among his most helpful resources.
With patience, for it is the most beneficial strategy for him
