What sort of world is this, and what sort of age?

Every day it is said, 'So-and-so has died.'

Some of us draw others along; in the hands

of each dead one lies a rein for each living one.

Our abode, in which we dwell, is nothing but

an abode of war; there is no safety in it.

    أو شَبَبْنا ناراً فنحنُ دخانُ

    If we settle on the earth, we are dust;

or if we kindle a fire, we are smoke.

    كلَّ يومٍ للهِ في الخَلْقِ شانُ

    We have always been between parting and reunion;

each day, God has His work within creation.

The two luminaries set in the east, away from us,

so our eyelids remained in darkness.

A calamity whose darkness dimmed the day,

so Nayruz and Mihrjan wept together.

After it, the horses grew angry with their bridles,

just as the spearhead disowned the shaft.

And the ringing of lament rose, and there flowed

pearls of tears, with coral among them.

O you two departing from us, wait a little!

Sorrows have indeed melted our hearts.

If decay overtakes you both, then, by my life,

cares and sorrows do not decay.

Such is love, in life and death:

affection and union have endured within it.

So peace be upon you both whenever there blows

a breeze and the gardens shake its hand.

And may a cloud water that earth,

with forgiveness and divine favor raining from it.
