أعطى الأميرُ المجيدُ اليومَ تُربتَهُ

أعطى الأميرُ المجيدُ اليومَ تُربتَهُ

فخراً بهِ افتخرَت لمَّا بها وُضِعَا

فخراً بهِ افتخرَت لمَّا بها وُضِعَا

Today the glorious prince endowed his grave

The noble prince today gave his soil

with glory; it took pride in him when he was laid within it.

It boasted of him when he was laid in it

قد حلَّ بالجسمِ فيها حينَ جادَ بهِ

قد حلَّ بالجسمِ فيها حينَ جادَ بهِ

لها وبالنَّفسِ أبوابَ السَّما قَرَعا

لها وبالنَّفسِ أبوابَ السَّما قَرَعا

He rested there in body when he freely gave it

Having gained access through his body there

to the grave, and with his soul knocked at heaven’s gates.

To it and his soul, the gates of heaven he knocked

هذا الشِّهابُ الذي قد كانَ مرتفِعاً

هذا الشِّهابُ الذي قد كانَ مرتفِعاً

في الأرضِ واليومَ في أوج العُلَى اُرْتَفَعَا

في الأرضِ واليومَ في أوج العُلَى اُرْتَفَعَا

This Shihab—this shooting star—who once stood high

This meteor which had been high

on earth, has today risen to the zenith of glory.

On earth and today at the zenith ascended

فاكتُبْ على قبرِهِ يا مَن يُؤَرِّخُهُ

فاكتُبْ على قبرِهِ يا مَن يُؤَرِّخُهُ

قد غابَ عنا شِهابٌ في السَّما طَلَعَا

قد غابَ عنا شِهابٌ في السَّما طَلَعَا

So write upon his grave, O you who date his passing:

So inscribe on his grave, O historian

A Shihab—a shooting star—has vanished from us and risen in heaven.

A meteor in the sky has set
