لِهذاto this الفَرْقِhair-parting دانَbowed الفَرْقدانِthe two Farqad stars
علىin خَجَلٍshame فليسَfor ... is not الفَرْقُthe difference دانيslight; literally, near
To this hair-parting the two Farqad stars bowed,
For this separation, the moon of separation bowed
in shame, for the difference is no slight one.
In shyness, so separation is not lowly

And the tall lances envy this figure
And this statute, the high places envy it
for a thrust that pierces without a spearhead.
For a wound that pierces without a spearhead
بِرُوحيwith my soul as ransom وجَنةٌa cheek لاحَتْshone وفاحَتْand gave off fragrance
فكانَتْso it became وَردةًa rose مِثلَlike الدِّهانِoil
My soul for a cheek that shone and breathed fragrance,
By my soul a garden appeared and it smelled
so it became a rose, like oil.
So it was like a rose similar to dye

On it the beauty mark stood like a royal crown,
On it the mole stood like a king’s crown
and its cheek-down was like a scepter.
So for it the flirtation was like a sword

Cheek-down traced a line in basil
A flirtation that drew with basil a line
that taxes the interpreter's tongue.
That is hard on the tongue of the translator

It clothed the cheek in fine green silk; then was cast
It dressed it in green satin and so
upon me, by tears, a robe of crimson.
The teardrop threw on me the dress of purple
أقولُI say لعاذليto my reproacher مَهلاًbe gentle فإنِّيfor I
أرَىI see الإحسانَgoodness فيin حُبِّlove of الحِسانِthe beautiful ones
I tell my reproacher: Be gentle, for I
I say to my blamer wait, for I
see goodness in loving the beautiful.
See beneficence in loving the beautiful

For I am not like your companion Uways,
So I am not the peer of your friend Uwais
nor am I another like my friend al-ʿUmari.
Nor am I to my friend Umar a second

بحُبِّthrough love of العِلمlearning عنwithout needing حُبِّlove of الغَوانيbeautiful women
Shihab al-Din is self-sufficient in this world,
The star of religion in the world is rich
through love of learning, needing no love of fair women.
With love of knowledge without love of singing girls

Shihab al-Din is a light in al-Zawra',
The star of religion in Zawra is a light
shining upon the farthest reaches of the two Wests.
That illuminates to the farthest west

He dwelt in the land of Iraq and became rain,
He lodged the land of Iraq and so became a rain
by which those far and near have their thirst quenched.
By which the far and near are watered
فغَنَّتْthen sang وُرْقُgray doves لُبنانَLebanon ابتِهاجاًin joy

Then Lebanon's gray doves sang in joy,
So the leaves of Lebanon sang joyfully
and the mouths of daisies smiled.
And the borders of the gardens smiled

An exquisite commendation came to me from him,
There came to me from it excellent commemoration
displaying artistry in meaning and expression.
That excelled in meanings and rhetoric

It resembled a necklace of pearls; yet not everyone
It recounted a necklace of pearls and not everyone
has a neck befitting a necklace of pearls.
Is suited to his excellence, a necklace of pearls

Upon the City of Peace and its inhabitants
Upon the abode of peace and its inhabitants
be God's peace from the chambers of Paradise.
May the peace of God from the gardens of paradise
أَتوقُI yearn علىon the basis of السَّماعِhearing إلىfor حِماهاits precincts

Hearing of it, I yearn for its precincts,
I long to listen to its protector
as a lover longs at the sight.
As the lover longs for seeing
تُرَىI wonder, will عينيmy eye تَرَىsee مَنthe one whom لاnot أَراهُI see him

Will my eye, I wonder, see him whom I do not see,
My eye sees whom I do not see
as fate has decreed, and who does not see me?
As the decree ruled, and he does not see me
لَئِنْif indeed سَمَحَgranted الزَّمانُtime لناto us بيومٍwith a day
فذاكَthen that اليَومُday يَومُa day of المِهْرَجانِthe festival
If indeed time grants us a day,
If time allows for us one day
then that day will be a festival day.
Then that is the day of celebration
