The smoke rose, yet no flame appeared with it;
but the firewood was torn apart by what lay beneath it.

And thunder rumbled, but we found no rain
after it, and the clouds around it cleared away.

Wretched is the dust in whose owner's eye
the grit from it lodged when it rose.

Those sparrows set out attempting
to hunt the hawks, but escape became their catch.

Pawns have challenged the rooks in
ignorance—and behold, their houses are ruins.

O house of Raslan, may your dwellings ever remain
lofty, accompanied by the seven shining stars.

Your claim to awe and reverence is fully established
before one to whom ranks are never unknown.

The discerning man among us says in your gatherings:
O my soul, in such a setting, courtesy is required.

The gentle find every honor with you,
while woe and destitution befall the violent.

Like the sea: the sword's blade sinks as it plunges
into it, while the scabbard's strap and wood float.

If their ignorance has deluded some into covetous hopes
concerning you, delusion has nothing to gain with you.

And your forbearance stands above the ignorant's offense, so no
offense exceeds it, nor does it succumb to rancor.
لاnot يُحسَبُis counted العفوُpardon إلاّexcept بعدَafter مَقدرَةٍpower
لا يُحسَبُ العفوُ إلاّ بعدَ مَقدرَةٍ
نَعَمْyes ولاand no حِلْمَforbearance بعدafter العَجْزِhelplessness يُحتَسَبُis credited
نَعَمْ ولا حِلْمَ بعد العَجْزِ يُحتَسَبُ
Pardon counts only when one has the power to punish;
yes, and forbearance born of helplessness does not count.

And the forbearing man is not one content to kiss a hand,
but one who is provoked, yet anger does not stir him.
