The finest elegy is one that soothes the heart,

That quenches sorrow, not one that stirs grief.

And tear-provoking laments harm the living, causing distress

To them, and do not benefit the dead who have departed.

Is the loss of a beloved—whoever has tasted it knows.

And the most helpful course to seek at such a time

Is beautiful patience, in which the heart's wound finds healing.

A precious one—then separation came and snatched her away.

As though she had never existed in days gone by.

Worn away her good name, which lives on in her stead.

Whoever keeps company with time is not safe from its calamities,

For how often the sun has been eclipsed, and how often the full moon!

And whoever lives, his eye is never free

Of a harrowing sight or a tear shed.

O people, rise from your slumber

For a journey whose trumpet has called to everyone.

It has grown gray, and so has he, yet his soul's passion has grown.

A longing that, whenever his days grow shorter,

Grows longer for him, and strengthens as he weakens.

Alas for the cruelty of this parting—how it tyrannizes!

For we see no one who has found justice under its rule.

It sees the youth in night's darkness and pursues him,

Yet in broad daylight does not see the old man shuffling along.

It chooses the finest person to be its

Prey, then crosses the earth toward him, heedless of paths.

Among the fruits, plucking whatever it finds sweet.

Upon a tomb where a branch lies broken.

That form as a lām embraces an alif.

Attained an abode where the dweller's life is serene.

    لها وذلك منها حَسبْهُا وكَفَى

    This is the highest goal, for which she was created;

And that is enough for her, and fully suffices.
