The crow of parting hastened at daybreak,

and flew off with the little child's soul.

One day it came to hunt, and plucked him

like a fruit from among the fresh fruits.

May God melt your heart, you crow,

that seized the kernel of the broken heart.

You came today to drink the water of tears,

with which you had no need of the pool's water.

You are pledged to leave no little one alive,

nor show mercy to the aged man.

You spread a wing over the children of this world,

and another in the sky over the eagles.

Your Lord's peace be upon you, little one.

You journeyed from the bed to the tomb.

We were heedless of you; we gave you no provisions,

so the heart became your provision on the journey.

Grief for you has no equal,

    because you had no equal.

You attained sound judgment in your two years of life,

as though you had lived as many years as there are months.

We were eager for you to live for us, safe and sound,

yet that eagerness proved one of life's futile pursuits.

When will a mourner forget you, while each day

the inferno's fire flares anew in his heart?

    Hearts will forget you, yes—but

when they have turned to dust in the graves.

The light of your heart gave you sound judgment,

so you did not cling to the deceitful world.

You saw people on a long journey,

so you said, "Wisdom lies in the short journey."
