The beloved decays, while grief for him is renewed.

As though he were lost anew each day.

If he has become distant, far removed

From me, then my heart's solace is farther still.

They mention one virtue of the noble man,

While I count the stars as I enumerate his virtues.

Those pure-white qualities, for one who loves them,

    Make black garments fitting attire.

Woe is me! When shall I forget the one who banished sleep,

While his image cannot be banished from my eye?

I called to him, and my flowing tears replied.

And tears flow more freely in reply, and more generously.

O departed one, after whom my patience departed,

Is there a meeting for us before the Resurrection?

If you did not hear my wailing in the sanctuary,

Then upon your tomb a thousand tears bear witness.
