To one whose only crime was to protect
Safeguarding homes, wealth, and lives;
Homes, wealth and family from defilement

He whose neighbors, like Abraham, have remained
To one who, like Abraham, was ever a neighbor
Amid the flames, unharmed by their scorching heat;
Amidst raging flames, unharmed by their blaze

He whose concern is doing good with diligence,
One whose only thought was perfecting good
While one beneath him is intent on his vile conduct.
While others plotted in their errant ways

Serene of brow, generous of hand, endowed
Great standing blended with the spirit of gentleness.
With mighty station and gentle grace.

Tender in youth, his wisdom puts elders to shame;
A sage though young, whose wisdom shamed the old
His speech is supported by proof and arguments.
His words reinforced by proof and evidence clear

His drink is knowledge, in books that are his drinking companions
Knowledge his drink in books that were his friends
In private; so he is enraptured—not by lute and song.
He was transported not by song or cheer
كمhow many منof أيادٍfavors لهُof his ماnot زلتُI ceased أذكُرُهاI recall them

How many favors of his I still recall,
The kind acts I recall, blessings without count
And many a blessing I will not forget throughout the years!
I'll ne'er forget, however many days stretch ahead
أناI لهُhis كَيفَماhowever دارَturns الزَّمانُtime بهِwith him
ومَعْهُand with him حيثُwherever استَوَىhe takes his place فيهِin it منَamong الدَرَجِthe steps
I am his, however time may turn for him,
My loyalty to him, whatever may come to pass
And with him, on whatever step he stands.
I'll follow wherever destiny's thread should lead.
