فأتاهُ في السَّفَرِ القَضاءُ الجاري
Peter had come from the capitals of the Armenians.
Peter came from the cities of Armenia,
Then fate, running its course, overtook him on his journey.
Fate befell him in travel the fate that flows,
وثَوَىand he lay ضريحاًentombed للمُؤرِّخِfor the chronicler فوقَهُabove him
وثَوَى ضريحاً للمُؤرِّخِ فوقَهُ
طالَwas prolonged البكاءُthe weeping علىover غريبِa stranger الدَّارِhome
طالَ البكاءُ على غريبِ الدَّارِ
And he lay entombed, with the chronicler’s words above him:
And became over him a tomb for the historian -
Long was the weeping over the stranger far from home.
Long has the weeping been for the far lodger.
