O seller of patience, do not pity the buyer,

For a dirham of patience is worth a thousand dinars.

Nothing like patience heals its bearer's wound,

Nor has an apothecary's shop held its like.

This is the remedy whose draught extinguishes sorrows,

Like cool water quenching the fierceness of fire.

And keeps the heart in lasting soundness,

Until financial hardship is replaced by ease.

Indeed, well-being is a treasure; every mustard seed

Of it is worth a qintar of wealth.

And wealth is called a friend when it is needed,

Yet it may be an enemy within the house.

O you who grieved over losing wealth, you were indeed

Created naked, and there is no shame in that.

Just as that wealth came yesterday, earned,

It will come tomorrow from the Almighty, wondrous in kindness.

Time's vicissitudes unfold throughout the lands according to

    People's stations, measure for measure.

Indeed, the winds strike the date palms and snap them,

Yet do not snap the branch of wormwood or laurel.

If the least remnant of you remains, however small,

Then it is a fragment of a mountain of mountains.

Suppose you are the sun, rising in the celestial spheres:

Does the sun escape eclipse and murk?

    فلا يَحُطُّ عُلاها كسفُ أنوارِ

    And the sun in its zodiacal sign is still the sun, even eclipsed;

So the eclipsing of its rays does not lower its loftiness.

Time has a day against us that does not last, just as

A day in our favor did not last under its prevailing rule.

The branch does not stay bare and fruitless for long

Before you see it bearing leaves and fruit.

God will open a door you do not know,

And a path unseen by eyes.

If we cut off the soul's hope of relief,

Then we have cut ourselves off from the Creator's mercy.
