    O crescent that appeared more splendid than the full moon,

    Yet an eclipse overtook you at the very start of the month.

    You remained with us five days and ten, while we have

    So many fives and tens of days of mourning for you.

    You wounded hearts for whose wounds we sought

    A remedy; they said, “There is no remedy but patience.”

    Whoever lives in this treacherous world finds it turning

    Against him; no one is granted safety from betrayal.

    فيا حبَّذا لو كنتَ قبلاً على الهَجرِ

    God decreed separation immediately after meeting;

    How I wish we had been apart before we met.

    If the good we have gained must pass away,

    Better than it is the evil that passes away.

    We obeyed and entrusted our affairs to God,

    In every circumstance, for He commands all affairs.

    He chose one He loves and swiftly drew him

    To Himself, pure, his innocence unblemished.

    إليهِ ولم يُردَدْ إلى أرذَلِ العُمرِ

    He answered Him, his life still serene, untouched by sorrow;

    He had not been brought to the feeblest stage of old age.

    O grave of Ibrahim, you have become his cradle

    And his companion, remaining until the end of time.

    O grave of Ibrahim, honor this cherished one,

    Dear to a mother whose breast is torn with grief.

    O face of Ibrahim, decay has changed you,

    As the anguish of grief has changed us, if only you knew.

    Yesterday someone came to offer congratulations; today someone came

    To offer condolences, and sweetness was almost mixed with bitterness.

    فَمَن حازَ تسليماً لهُ فازَ بالأجرِ

    Both this and that are the decree of Him whose decree prevails;

    Whoever accepts His decree with submission wins the reward.
