    فبياضُ العِذار بيَّضَ عُذري

    My verse has turned gray, just as my hair has turned gray;

So the whiteness of my sideburns has made my excuse spotless.

In youth I had a night, and yet

What night can be without a dawn?

My resolve; thus my shortness sprang from length.

My flowing blood became the juice of aloe.

They struck me and caused pain—not like a blow

That passed between Zayd and ʿAmr in grammar.

My breast grew tight, yet I did not complain, for

Through complaint I gained only tightness in my breast.

And I wished for peace of mind, so they said:

That lies with the Shaykh al-Islam—so know it.

Seek refuge in his noble breaths, and win

Blessings that flow to him from the Throne.

And touch his corner, from which you receive

A festival day followed by a Night of Decree.

A Sinai of learning for its Lord, who reveals Himself

Upon it each day, without a veil.

    وعَصاهُ تلقَّفتْ كلَّ سِحْرِ

    His utterance fed every ear with manna;

And his staff swallowed up all sorcery.

A drop of his bounty is a sea, and a day

Of his favor is greater than a thousand months.

    تِبرُنا عندهُ قُلامَةُ ظُفَرِ

    And a glance from him is gold to us;

Our gold, to him, is a fingernail clipping.

    عندهُ صارَ جَدولاً كلُّ بحرِ

    A sea of knowledge, he gives a purifying drink;

Beside him, every sea has become a stream.

Good fortune from him floods a great kingdom

Belonging to a great man on earth, master of command:

A king with whom the learned have standing,

As in the Messenger's dealings with the people of Badr.

A slave of ʿAbd al-ʿAziz is an honored slave,

Exulting in honor above every free man.

Every heart that has not turned from devotion to him

Passes the night safe from every fracture.

This is the dynasty longed for

By all the people of time, in every age.

If every dynasty were a line of verse,

Then this would be the rhyme consonant of all poetry.

No soul is a stranger to miserliness except

The soul of ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, my treasure and my reserve.

That man—without him, I would not have uttered praise

For a generous man, nor known gratitude.
