شوقيmy longing إليكَfor you كماas علِمْتَyou know طويلُlong
ولَعلَّand perhaps صبريmy patience فيin هواكِlove for you جميلُnoble
My longing for you, as you know, is long.
My longing for you, as you know, is long
And perhaps my patience in loving you is noble.
And perhaps my patience in loving you is beautiful
ياO غائباًabsent one فيin القلبِthe heart يحضُرُis present شخصُهُhis form
فكأنَّهُso it is as though it ليfor me منكَfrom you عنكَin your stead بديلُa substitute
O absent one whose form is present in my heart,
O absent one in my heart whose image is present
as though it were, for me, a substitute from you in your stead.
As if he were for me in your absence, a substitute

The journey to visit you is too far for one weak and helpless;
The shrine is too far for one weak and incapable
this letter to you serves as his proxy.
This book to you about it is a deputy

If you deny the burning anguish in his heart,
If you deny the ache in his heart
then he has trustworthy witnesses in his wasting sickness.
It has witnesses from those who resented him that are just
حالتhave intervened مواميwastelands الأرضِof the earth دُونكَin the way to you بالنَّوَىthrough separation
ولطَالماand how often دُونَin the way of البُدورِthe full moons تَحُولُthey intervene
The earth's wastelands have come between us, keeping you far away,
The undulations of the earth stood between you and yearning
and often have they barred the way to full moons.
And for so long beyond the dunes it tosses and turns
ورأيتُand I saw شخصَكَyour form فيin البِعادِthe distance فإنَّهُfor it is
قَمَرٌa moon نراهُwe see it وماand there is no إليهِto it وُصولُreaching
And I saw your form from afar, for it is
And I saw your figure in the distance, it
a moon we see, yet cannot reach.
Is like the moon we see but cannot reach
ياO دُرَّةَpearl الغَوَّاصِof the diver دُونَbefore لِقائهاreaching it

O diver's pearl, before one can reach you lie
O pearl of the diver, without meeting her
deep waters! May I be your ransom—is there a way to you?
There are roaring seas, I sacrifice myself for you, is there a way?
نَترتْhave torn apart صُروفُthe vicissitudes الدهرِof time عِقدَthe necklace نِظامناour union

فنَثَرتُso I scattered دمعيmy tears وهوand it is فيكَfor you قليلُlittle
Time's vicissitudes have torn apart the necklace of our union,
The turns of fate have unraveled our pact
so I scattered my tears, yet they are too few for you.
So I shed my tears while in you it is little
شَطرُhalf الفُؤادِof the heart حبيبُهُits beloved فإذاso when نأيhe goes far away

نُهِكَis exhausted الفُؤادُthe heart فطُلَّand goes unavenged منهof it قتيلُa slain one
The heart's beloved is half of it; so when he goes afar,
Half of the heart is its beloved so when it is distant
the heart is exhausted, and its slain half goes unavenged.
The heart is devastated and from it comes a slain one
طالhas grown long انتِظاريmy waiting والحَياةُand life قصيرةٌshort
وكلاهُماand both of them سببٌa cause عليَّupon me ثَقيلُheavy
My waiting has grown long, and life is short,
Long has been my wait and life is short
and both are a burden weighing heavily upon me.
And both are heavy causes upon me
ويلاهُalas for me قدindeed ضاعَhas been lost الزَمانُtime فساقطٌso wasted
يومٌa day يَمُرُّpasses ولاand does not يَراكَsee you خليلُa dear friend
Alas! Time has been lost; wasted is
Woe the time is lost, fallen
a day that passes without a dear friend seeing you.
A day passes without your presence, O intimate friend

The pillar of life is its delight; if there is no
The pillar of life, its bliss, if it does not
sweetness in living, then life is superfluous.
In living contain goodness, then life is redundant

May my father ransom the sick man, unblemished in honor,
By my father the sick [poet], well-wishes, honor
whose like Gabriel longs to visit;
That yearns the return of the likes of Gabriel
مَنone who ليسَdoes not يَرَغبُwish فيfor سلامةِthe well-being نفسهِof his own self

one who does not seek his own well-being
Who does not desire the wellness of his soul
if goodness is not safe in his keeping.
If he did not have a beautiful one by his side
ياO ناحِلَwasted البَدَنِin body العليلِailing بلُطفِهِin its delicacy
لاmay ... not صَحَّتِbe well الدُنياthe world وأنتَwhile you are عليلُill
O you with the wasted body, delicately ailing,
O you who cured the ailing body with his gentleness
may the world not be well while you are ill!
Not the health of the world while you are ill
ياO ليتَwould that عنديwith me صِحَّةًhealth تُفدَىyou are ransomed بهاwith it

Oh, would that I had health with which you could be ransomed,
Oh, if only I had health that could be ransomed for you
but separation has left me wasted.
But the separation has laden me with burdens
سَيَزُولُwill pass away سُقمٌillness مثلَlike عافيةٍhealth مَضَتْthat has passed
إذsince كلُّall ماthat which تحتَbeneath السماءِthe sky يزُولُpasses away
Illness will pass away, like the health that has passed,
The sickness will pass as past wellness did
for everything beneath the sky passes away.
For all under the sky will perish

This eclipse has befallen you, O full moon of the darkness,
This eclipse of you, O full moon of nightfall
and we see that the full moon's eclipse does not last long.
And we see the eclipse of the full moon does not last long
