ذاكthat one الصِّحيحُthe healthy one وأنتَand you منهُfrom it سقيمُailing
Longing is given a seat and made to stay with you;
You are always home to yearning in the abode
it is hale, while you are sick from it.
While you remain immune from its ailment
إنif كانَis هذاthis الشوقُlonging داءًan illness حادثاًnewly arisen
فالحُبُّthen love داءٌan illness فيin الفُؤادِthe heart قديمُlong-standing
If this longing is a newly arisen illness,
If this longing is a malady come of late
then love is an ancient illness in the heart.
Then love is an age-old sickness of the heart
فيin كُلِّevery قلبٍheart للصَّبابةِfor ardent longing مَنزِلٌa dwelling
ولكلِّand for every صَبٍّpassionate lover مشرَبٌa drinking place معلومُknown
In every heart, ardent longing has a dwelling,
In every heart there lies a youthful nest
and every lover has a drinking place he knows.
And for each youth a well-known watering place
والحُبُّand love أشبَهُmore like بالحبيبِthe beloved كَرامةًin nobility
فكريمُهُso its noble form حيثُwhere الحبيبُthe beloved كريمُnoble
Love resembles the beloved in nobility,
Love is most resembling the beloved in dignity
so it is noble wherever the beloved is noble.
So wherever the beloved is noble, love is noble

Hearts have taken differing courses for a wise purpose;
Hearts are wont to differ by decree of wisdom
indeed, He who created hearts is wise.
For He who created hearts is All-Wise

If not for differences amongst humankind

No face would suffice to serve people's interests

In every eye there is delight and charm,
In every eye there lies allure and sweetness
and every soul has pleasure and bliss.
And to each soul belongs a bliss and bounty

And perhaps, in their view, some bad things
What by their claim appears a vice
are good, and some good things are blameworthy.
May be fair and what seems pure deemed mean

And many a man who excuses himself for a habit
How many their soul's trespass defend
forbids you to do it, offering counsel and reproach.
While advising you against it and objecting

And if you desist, you sometimes wrong yourself;
If once you did wrong yourself
for some advisers may be deeply unjust.
Some advisors may be unjust

The people of the age live in constant discord,
World's people are set in constant dispute
like time itself; and in discord lies necessity.
Like time, dispute in their nature ingrained

Judgments of an age whose mysteries are not known
except a sage deeply versed in God.

O You of the spoken and the tacit meaning

O master, time itself falls short of you
to the shame of whoever said, 'Time is mean.'
Abashed is he who called time mean

In your speech dispersed jewels abound
which have decreed that verse be offered to you.

Truths by your loftiness obscured
and outlines appeared to the onlookers' eyes.
Appearing to onlookers' eyes as forms

You brought forth subtleties from the magic of eloquence;
Of eloquence's sorcery marvels you evoked
Babylon's sorcerers wander bewildered, falling short of them.
Babylon's sorcerers dim compared to them

You revived ancient sciences, you who

Can revive the bones of the dead worn out

The Franks cannot deny his prestige
and the Turks have testified for him, as have the Romans.
The Turks witnessed for him, and the Romans

and every debt has a claimant and a debtor.
And for every debt a claimant and collector

Perhaps the excuse of one who falls short

More readily accepted than that of he who fails

still wanders in every valley.
Still adrift in every valley wandering blind

Oh, how sweet were youth's days! If only they
O gentlest days of youth would that
had lasted—yet nothing but God endures.
You stayed and none but God remains eternal

The days toyed with me, foolish as they are;
Days toyed with me foolishly
so I complained of them to Patience, who is forbearing.
So I complained to patience for it is forbearing

If you complain to one who listens, woe subsides
as though worries had been shared with him.
As if shared with him in full

That the oppressed then turn to you?

Why do we call you a sea in our midst,
Why call you sea when we're amidst you
when the sea drowns in you, itself deserving blame?
As seas drown in you though they be forbearing

Era's kings recognized your worth wherever
the Preserver, the Ever-Sustaining, laid down your staff.
The Protecting and Eternal dropped His staff

I praise you by what I knew and what surpassed
that whose hidden secret lies beyond my knowledge.
My knowledge, its secret is concealed
فإذاso if عَفوتَyou pardon فقدthen indeed وَفىhas done its part حُسْنُthe grace of الرِّضىacceptance

So if you pardon, gracious acceptance has done its part;
If you forgive, goodness of consent suffices
and if I apologize, submission has done its part.
If I apologize, acquiescence suffices
