إنif كُنتَyou are باللهِin God فيin دُنياكَyour earthly life تَعتصِمُyou seek refuge
فلاthen do not تَكُنْbe خائفاًafraid إنif زَلَّتِslips القَدَمُthe foot
If you hold fast to God in your earthly life,
then do not be afraid if your foot slips.
واطلُبْand seek لنَفسِكَfor yourself غَيرَother than الأرضِthe earth مَنزِلةًan abode
إنْif كُنتَyou are تَبِغيseeking نَعيماًbliss ماno بهِin it ألَمُpain
And seek for yourself an abode beyond the earth,
if you desire bliss untouched by pain.

منfrom نَكبةٍcalamity وَبلاياand afflictions الدَّهرِtime تَزدَحمُcrowd together
Whoever lives on earth cannot hope to be safe
from calamity, while time's afflictions crowd together.
وكيفَand how يأمَنُcan be safe منfrom لَطْمِthe battering of المياهِthe waters لهُagainst him
مَنwhoever خاضَwades فيinto البحرthe sea والأمواجُand the waves تَلتطِمُclash
And how can one be safe from the waters' battering
who wades into the sea while the waves clash?

The calamities of time choose the noble, and have never
ceased to be apportioned according to people's worth.
وهَمُّand the worry of كلٍّeach person علىin proportion to مِقدارِthe measure of همَّتِهِhis ambition
فلاso no هُمومَworries لقَومٍfor people ماnot لهمthey have هِمَمُaspirations
And each person's worry is in proportion to his ambition,
so people without ambition have no worries.

People are like enemies to one another; as ever,
for the most part, afflictions come from them.

If their harm is not deliberate, then it comes from error,
and their harm may come from an intention to help.
غَنيمةُthe prize of العيشِlife فيin الدُنياthis world تَجَنُّبُهمْavoiding them
لكنَّbut ذلكَthat مِمَّاamong what ليسَnot يُغتَنَمُcan be gained
The prize of life in this world is avoiding them,
but that is a prize one cannot secure.

بهِby it نَعيشُwe live ومنهُand from it يَحدُثُarises السَّقَمُsickness
They are like food, which we cannot do without:
by it we live, and from it sickness arises.
كلُّall الجَواهرِjewels أعراضٌincidentals رَزِيَّتُهاtheir loss

تَهونُis slight إذwhen تَسلَمُremain unharmed الأعراضُhonor والشِّيمُand character traits
All jewels are mere incidentals; their loss
matters little when honor and character remain intact.

بقُدرةِby the power of اللهِGod فيin أبدانِناour bodies النَّسَمُsouls
And wealth is like a breath of wind, so long as they remain unharmed—
by God's power—the souls within our bodies.
ليسَnot البُكاءُweeping لِفَقْدٍfor a loss بَعدَهُafter it خَلَفٌa replacement
إنindeed البُكاءَweeping لِفَقْدٍfor a loss بَعدَهُafter it عَدَمُnothingness
Weeping is not for a loss followed by a replacement;
indeed, weeping is for a loss followed by nothingness.

Wealth may grow again like a nail you cut,
and a breach in wealth heals like a wound.

لاnot يُفلِتُescapes الصَّيدُthe prey منهُfrom it حيثُwherever يَنهزِمُit flees
As long as the hunting falcon has wings,
its prey cannot escape it, wherever it flees.

فلاso not يَضِلُّstrays ولوand even if قامَتْrises بهاalong them الظُلَمُdarkness
And good fortune knows paths it has grown accustomed to,
so it does not stray, even if darkness rises along them.
أجَلُّgreater للمَرْءِfor a person منthan مجدِthe glory of الغِنَىwealth شَرَفاًin honor
مجدُthe glory of الوَفاءِfaithfulness تَقَوىreverence for اللهِGod والكَرَمُand generosity
Greater in honor for a person than the glory of riches
are the glory of faithfulness, reverence for God, and generosity.

And highest in rank among people in God's sight
is one who does not encroach on people's rights.

God has a secret in creation that we do not grasp,
and a wisdom before which all other wisdom fails.

The servant is given only what He has decreed, and nothing
befalls him except what the pen writes.

وليسَand not يَترُكُleaves جَمْراًan ember كانَwas يَضطِرمُblazing
God will mend a heart that lay broken through the night,
and He will not leave an ember still blazing.
لاno ضِيقَhardship فيin الدَّهرِtime إلاexcept بَعدَهُafter it فَرَجٌrelief
ولاand no شبيبةَyouth إلاّexcept بَعدَهاafter it هَرَمُold age
No hardship in life is without relief afterward,
and no youth is without old age afterward.

If God afflicts a servant's right hand with crippling stiffness,
He preserves the left, so stiffness does not ravage it.

If His blessing has not lasted with Nasr Allah,
then gratitude to God and blessings have made a pact.
