If much of the abundance has gone,
If much of the plentiful goes away
the little left has resolved to depart.
The little is determined to journey on
وإنand if ذهبَhas passed الكبيرُthe greater ولمand did not يُؤَثِرْhave an effect
فليسَthen not نخافُwe are afraid مِنof أثَرِthe effect الصَّغيرِthe lesser
And if the greater has passed without effect,
If the great goes and doesn’t leave a trace
then we do not fear the effect of the lesser.
We need not fear the footprint of the small

فلاso not ترتاعُit is frightened منby حرِّthe heat الهجيرِmidday
If a soul has escaped the flames unharmed,
If a soul is safe from fires
it does not dread the heat of noon.
Then do not dread the heat of hot winds

And one whom a lion's claw has not mauled
One not seized by the claws of a lion
will not be trampled by a camel's padded foot.
Will not be trampled by a camel's slipper

لأنَّكَbecause you قدalready صَبَرتَyou endured علىthrough العسيرِwhat is hard
Patience with a small trial comes easily to you,
A little patience from you is easy
because you have already endured what is hard.
For you have endured the most difficult

فتىًa youth قدalready خاضَhas waded فيin البحرِthe sea الكبيرِgreat
And would wading through watercourses frighten
And why would one plunging into rapids
a youth who has waded into the great sea?
Dread it, having crossed the vast ocean?

Keep a cheerful spirit and be at ease,
Be content and submit
and submit to the all-powerful King.
To the Almighty Sovereign
فإنَّfor indeed الخوفَfear داءٌan illness فَوْقَon top of داءٍan illness
يُذِيبُmelts one away إذاwhen تَعلَّقَclings بالضميرِto the inner self
For fear is an illness upon an illness,
For fear is an illness, atop all illness
that melts one away when it clings to the heart.
Melting the heart if it grips the conscience
وفِعْلُand the action اللهِGod يُبطِلُnullifies كُلَّevery فِعلٍaction

And God's action nullifies every action,
God's action voids all other action
and overcomes the medicine of Dawud the discerning.
And defeats David the Wise's potion

ويَقظتُهمand their awakening لدَىat النَّوْمِsleep الأخيرِthe final
People's life in this world is a dream,
The life of people in this world is a dream
and their awakening comes at the final sleep.
And their awakening is at the final rest
وكلُّand all العمرِlife يومٌa day أنتَyou فيهِin it
فماso what فَرْقُdifference الطويلِthe long عنfrom القصيرِthe short
And all of life is the day you are in,
And all of life is but a day you are in
so how does a long life differ from a short one?
So what's the difference between long and short?

يموتَhe dies فكُلُّthen every عبدٍslave كالأميرِlike the prince
And some of the living stand above others until
Some of the living surpass others until
they die; then every slave is like a prince.
Death comes and every slave is like an emir
وبيتُand the house العَنْكبوتِthe spider إذاwhen رحلناwe depart

And a spider's house, when we depart,
When we depart, a spider's web
is equal to al-Khawarnaq and al-Sadir.
Equals a palace and mansion
ونفسُand the soul المرءِa person فيin الدُّنياthis world أسيرٌa captive
ومَوْتُand the death الجسمِthe body إطلاقُrelease الأسيرِthe captive
And one's soul is a captive in this world,
And the soul of a person in this world is captive
and the body's death is the captive's release.
While the body's death releases the captive

So grieve not for this world, but
So no regrets over the world, but
for the fate that lies beyond it.
Over what comes after that fate

ونومُand the sleep الصالحينَthe righteous علىon حريرِsilk
The sinners sleep on thornbushes,
The wicked sleep on their sides
and the righteous sleep on silk.
While the good sleep on silk

قُبيلَjust before البينِparting عنto صوتِthe voice النَّذيرِthe warner
And the most remorseful of the heedless is one who turned a deaf ear
And the heedless will regret blocking their ears
to the warner's voice just before parting.
Before the separation, from the voice of the warner
وإنَّand indeed النُّصحَcounsel فيin الحُكَماءِthe wise يجريflows
كَجْريِlike the flowing الماءِwater فيin الرَّوضِthe garden النَّضيرِverdant
And counsel flows through the wise
Advice flows through the wise
like water flowing through a verdant garden.
Like water flows through fresh meadows
وفيand in أُذُنِthe ear الجَهولِthe ignorant person يضيعُis lost هَدْراًto no avail
كضَوءِlike the light الصُّبحِdawn فيin عينِthe eye الضَّريرِthe blind person
And in the ignorant one's ear it goes to waste,
And is lost fruitlessly in the ears of fools
like the light of dawn in a blind man's eye.
Like the dawn gleam in a blind man's eyes
