I mourn in verse—and oh, if only I knew who will mourn me!

Has that time already come, or will it wait a while?

    فيُحسَبُ الحَيُّ مَيتاً غيرَ مدفونِ

    Everyone is death's captive, with no ransom for him;

so the living are reckoned dead, though unburied.

Tell the one who struts proudly through his world:

Your pride is lost between water and clay.

When you look among the graves, taking heed,

there you will see the crowns of sultans.

Alas for this world, so precarious!

For it is frailer than the blossoms of gardens.

    فليسَ يومٌ ولا ليلٌ بمأمونِ

    We spend evening and morning in this world in peril;

for neither day nor night is safe.

My heart has wearied of a life that holds no beauty

save beauty mingled with disfigurement and debasement.

A heart whose dwelling I see in the lands of al-Sham,

and whose patience lies in the lands of India and China.

Every day brings an unexpected calamity,

and anguish over a parting never imagined.

Time has left not a single one of our loved ones,

but it has left their traces to grieve me.

My grief for that full moon, eclipsed

in his beauty by the earth—if only he had remained like a date-palm stalk!

After he was gone, our eyes darkened and saw

September's daylight, in their sight, as the night of Kanun.

Alas, how much strangeness lies in Time's vicissitudes!

And you are not permitted to inquire into them.

It gives and withholds, with neither the praise due the generous nor

the miser's excuse, nor observance of laws.

How many have held sway in religion and worldly life through their holdings,

who are suited to neither worldly life nor religion!

And one whose well-being the world desires has died,

while one lives whose death would be the sweetest of fragrant flowers.

This is the decree of Him who, on the throne of His power,

directs affairs between the letters kaf and nun.

So be patient; and if you wish, give way to grief—if you are able to

ward off calamity and set the scales aright.
