سلامُ اللهِ أيَّتُها القِبابُ
أمَضْرِبُكِis your dwelling-place القُلوبُthe hearts أمِor التُرابُthe dust
أمَضْرِبُكِ القُلوبُ أمِ التُرابُ
God's peace upon you, O domes!
Greetings of Allah unto you, O domes
Is your abode in hearts, or in the dust?
Are your hearts struck or is it the soil?
وماand what لِنَزيلِfor a guest قومِكِof your people منof نَصيبٍa share
وما لِنَزيلِ قومِكِ من نَصيبٍ
تُرَىone wonders أيُصيبُwill he obtain خيراًgood أمor يُصابُhe is afflicted
تُرَى أيُصيبُ خيراً أم يُصابُ
And what share has a guest among your people?
What share does an inhabitant of your people have
I wonder: will he gain good, or be afflicted?
Will he attain goodness or be stricken?

I stood beside the valley, and a yearning cry arose
I stood at the side of the valley, so it inclined
from the riding camels as I repeated my longing there.
To echo my yearning - the riders passed by

And I addressed the dwellings, but they did not answer me;
I spoke to the abode but it did not answer me
not every utterance has a reply.
Not every discourse elicits a response

Dwellings in which I have a radiant moon:
An abode where I had a shining moon
he has hidden himself, and the clouds are his veil.
It disappeared and the clouds were its veil

He has a lip that offers its beholder a drink,
It has lips - for its beholder a drink
but the portion of one who comes to drink is a mirage.
But the lot of its seeker is a mirage

And an eye whose blackness comes from my heart,
In it is a gaze from my heart - blackened
and a palm whose dye comes from my blood.
And a palm tinted with my blood

وذاكand that الصّدُّturning away كانَwas هُوَitself العَذابُthe torment
وذاك الصّدُّ كانَ هُوَ العَذابُ
I complained to him of torment, but he turned away in pride;
I complained of torment, so it turned away indifferent
and that turning away was itself the torment.
That indifference itself was the torment

فلا الشَكوَى تُفيدُ ولا العِتابُ
If a complainant's plight does not concern you,
If the plight of a complainer does not trouble you
neither complaint nor reproach will help.
Then neither complaining nor reproach will benefit

حسِبتُ لهُ فما صَدَقَ الحِسابُ
What I did not expect came to pass; and many a matter
What I never expected came to pass and many a matter
I reckoned on, yet my reckoning proved false.
I expected to happen but the calculations were false

And I have dealt with humankind: how many an enemy
I associated with people - how many a foe
is clad in the garments of his friendship!
Wore on him the garb of friendship as clothing

And many a companion has dragged off wealth
How many a companion who amassed wealth
such as claw and fang drag off among foes.
Dragging along spoils and war booty

And many a man I called did not answer me,
And how many a man I called but did not answer
while another calls me and goes unanswered.
And others call him, and he answers not

We see some faulting the qualities of others,
We see some faulting the traits of others
and no faultfinder goes without being faulted.
Yet no fault-finder but has faults

يَعيبُونَ الأميرَ بفَرْطِ جُودٍ

They fault the emir for his excessive generosity,
They blame the prince for excessive generosity
as though clouds were faulted for their rain.
As if the rain clouds were blamed for the rain

And how could the giving of gifts frighten
Why would one who does not fear death
a brave man who has no fear of death?
Fear the giving of gifts?

The qualities of glory are a chain linked in succession,
The virtues of glory are a chain, linked
just as the joints of a spear are aligned.
As the beads are strung on a spear's tassel

A pillar rose high among the sons of Qays,
A pillar in the clan of Qais, eminent
and the headstrong among the sons of Yaman were humbled.
Before whom the stout of Yemen bow

He dwelt upon the land's back and became its head,
He occupies the land's expanse, and is the head
to whom shoulders and necks bow.
To whom necks and shoulders bow

In his face you see the mark of glory,
You see on his face the mark of glory
like a title by which a book is known.
Like a title making clear the content of a book

He appears openly, without secluding himself, yet
He presents himself unveiled, yet
his overwhelming majesty forms a veil around him.
His awe itself veils him

Every door stands before him against every evil,
For every evil, each door is open to him
but no door stands before him against good deeds.
Yet no door is open to virtues for him

He girded himself with rulership, for it is a sword
He assumed authority, which is a sword
in the palm of one through whom swordplay excels.
In the grip of one who freely strikes

He came to us named Bashir, a herald of glad tidings,
He came with the name Al-Basheer, bringing us good tidings
and in him is kinship with what his name signifies.
And in him is lineage to his namesake

If indeed the choking griefs of nights have toyed with him,
If the nights have toyed with him
then behold: today the drink has come to them.
Behold, their day of drinking has arrived

The sun may be shrouded by clouds
but fog does not eclipse it.
But cannot be eclipsed by clouds

Mountains have grown mighty under his rule;
Mountains are prideful of his reign
upon them stand hills of his generous deeds.
Upon them are his generosity's hills

Gazelles spend the night there while lions roam,
In them the deer and lions roam
and sheep and wolves graze within them.
And the sheep and wolves graze

He has lions among the band that comes to his aid,
In his clan of helpers are lions
for whom leveled ash-wood spears form forests.
Faced with their onslaught, forests quake

Dishonor turns their faces away in shame,
Shame turns their faces pale
but spears do not turn their faces away.
Not war paint turns their faces pale

They stand looking to a dear one
whose beholder feels delight and trembling.
For the onlooker, joy and anxiety mingle

He possesses two portions of honor: this
He encompasses two halves of nobility - one
is his inheritance, and that his own achievement.
His inheritance, the other his own making

Open-hearted in hardship and in ease,
Open-handed in hardship and ease
those spacious courts grow cramped with his visitors.
At his arrival, those courtyards are straitened

A young man from whom favor and pardon are hoped for,
A youth hoped to please and feared to displease
and anger and punishment are feared.
Feared his wrath and punishment

and in his deeds, his judgment is right.
In his deeds, correct opinion

يَرَى حَقَّ القَضاءِ فلا صِحابُ
He recognizes the claim his companions have on him, until
He sees the rights companions have over him
he sees justice's claim—then there are no companions.
Until he sees the rights of destiny - no companionship then

And he looks on his enviers with a contented eye,
And looks upon his enviers with accepting eyes
out of a forbearance they have recorded, though they rage.
They harbored rancor, while he was forbearing

He has gained the lead by a great distance;
He won the lead from afar off
the purebred Arab steeds fall short of him.
Horses of purebred stock fall short of him

So I said to whoever would race him: Gently!
So I said to one who would compete with him: Gently!
You will catch him when the raven grows gray.
You will overtake him once the raven turns white
