all the brocade and striped cloth the Persians make.

is smoke from hospitality's fire, watered with slaughtered camels' blood.

at heart by gazelles of companionship and modesty.

Each a narrow-eyed beauty with whom you trade no sidelong glances,

dark-eyed, without a trace of kohl.

The beautiful woman is she whose charms

are God's handiwork, not the handiwork of humankind.

Whatever I forget, I shall not forget a day I have kept recalling,

and a halt to the right of Mudar's encampment.

in the saddle, and spend the night in conversation.

A reciter spends the night reciting from al-Kindi

to us, and we recite to him from our master al-Umari.

and beware of intoxication, O sober one.

Iraq's lodestar, whose fame extends through the Levant

no land lies far from the moon's radiance.

when they arrived, and we knew the tree by its fruit.

and hardship makes you content with a trace in place of presence.

from me, and hides true news from me.

God's decree and destiny—except for separation.

and if it clears for an hour, it is not free of cloudiness.

nor preserves union for one who longs.

When we meet, our end is separation,

like the bow that brings arrow and bowstring together.
