كتبناwe wrote فوقهُupon it بدمِwith the blood of العُيونِthe eyes
كتبنا فوقهُ بدمِ العُيونِ
For Antoun al-Mudawwar, a tombstone;
The rounded lintel, a tablet of lead
we wrote upon it with the blood of our eyes:

أياO غُصنَbranch النَّقاthe sand dune إنَّindeed المناياdeaths
أيا غُصنَ النَّقا إنَّ المنايا
كماas أرَّختُI recorded the date قاصِفةُbreaker of الغُصونِthe branches
كما أرَّختُ قاصِفةُ الغُصونِ
O branch of the sand dune, death indeed,
O, branch of anemia, deaths are indeed
as I have dated it, shatters the branches.
