The mistress of wide eyes says to my heart:
"Come to your senses; do not stand amid keen swords and arrows."

Her eye has enslaved it, though she herself is a slave;
Alas for the slave of a slave—humiliation upon humiliation!

A maiden whose neck's beauty makes the necklace jealous,
And whose eyes laugh proudly at kohl.

I wept when she let down the folds of her veil;
She said, "This cloud has poured down heavy rain."

Slender of flank, she sways like lances,
With a balanced figure, yet no trace of justice in it.

So slender is her waist, she almost makes her necklace
A girdle, as like is exchanged for like.

She let a tress flow over the roses of her cheeks,
For fear of withering, which she countered with shade.
وخَطَّتْand she inscribed لخَوفِfor fear of العَينِthe evil eye بالوَشمby tattooing رُقْيةًa protective charm

And, fearing the evil eye, she tattooed a protective charm
Upon her wrists, like damascening upon a blade.

She took to Bedouin ways, though her paternal uncles are not of Quda‘ah,
Nor are her maternal uncles counted among Banu Dhuhl.

She rejected nothing of theirs but generosity and fidelity,
And retained nothing of theirs but plunder and killing.

They blame me for bearing humiliation in love,
As though they had never seen a lover before me.

If you blame one whose foot cannot break its fetter,
Then you are more deserving of blame and reproach.

To God I complain of my enchantress's tyranny:
If she was content with my heart, I gave her my reason too.

And I thank our generous lord, through whom
My soul has become too occupied for all of that.

An imam among the peerless, the pole of his age,
And he holds learning in bondage, both rational and transmitted.

Upon him, from the Guide whose servant he is,
Be peace as numerous as raindrops or grains of sand.

He is the scholar, the great savant, the man of deeds who
Before his Lord has performed obligatory and voluntary worship.

Whenever he ascends the pulpits' platforms to preach,
You would say, "A messenger has come in an interval between messengers."

A letter came to me from him, reviving with its arrival
My heart, like the Nile's flood in a drought-stricken land.

Dearer to the ears than Ma‘bad's melody,
And sweeter in the mouth than the honey of bees.

He graciously bestowed praise that he himself deserves;
So I could not thank him enough for that favor.

Even if that praise missed its mark, how welcome
The pains one such as the shaykh took for my sake!

God be with you, O you great in renown and bounty;
So preeminence is rightly his, in name and deed.

And O you whom rhymes answer, charging forth
In ways more hidden from sight than the path of ants.

To you I send a bride, bashful before you in awe;
So she wrapped herself up and walked at a gentle pace.

She was entrusted with my wounded heart, though she knew it not;
So it was like that measuring cup in that saddlebag.

I yearn for those lands and their people,
All alike, as one far from home yearns for his kin.

If no way to reunion lies open to me.
