Fasting has come, serene of eye and rejoicing,

in him through whom his visitors gain honor.

And Eid, longing to see him, wishes

that fasting be but a single day, and that suffice.

    فَقِفْ لديهِ كمَنْ في الكعبْةِ اعتَكَفا

    This is the minister whose presence commands such awe;

so stand before him like one in devotional retreat within the Kaaba.

And say to him, “May you live for years equal in number to the

hours of its month, encompassed by glory.”

And greet Beirut with glad tidings, for she has obtained

what she had previously desired from him.

Ah, how long she endured until relief came!

For every matter depends upon its appointed time.

He gave Damascus a share of his stay,

and the same in Beirut, dividing it equally,

like the sun, which apportions time to the earth: whenever

it leaves one part of the earth, it visits another.

A feast among us has already outstripped Eid; rejoicing

in it are souls whose draught of happiness has grown clear.

This one's joy endures through the days

for us; that one passes in a day and is gone.
