A greeting—but what good are greetings at a distance?

Yet it is most fitting as a reminder of our bond.

    فألهُو بذاكَ الرَّسم والرَّسمُ لا يُجدي

    A greeting to one whose letters alone I see;

so I divert myself with that writing, though writing avails nothing.

    فكانَ غريمي شُقَّةَ الغَورِ والنجدِ

    A beloved whose company distance has folded away;

so the long stretch of lowland and upland became my adversary.

There is no good in neighboring homes when there is hatred,

nor harm in distant homes when there is love.

God bless him—how well he has kept affection in his heart,

even as inscriptions are erased from solid stone.

Time's reversals, anger, and separation pass

over him, yet have no effect at all.

A faithful friend: whenever I say he has ceased to love

because of distance, I find that distance has increased his longing.

I know I fall short of him in every way,

so I can match his excellence with nothing but praise.

Hopes soothe us from one day to the next

with a promise—and woe to fulfillment at promise's hands!

But far from it! Life's promise cannot stand

against death's decrees, which annul the pact.

We sought closeness, but you drew away; if only we had

sought separation, O you who answer with the opposite!

And how many find what they never sought,

and how many seek what they cannot attain through effort!

My heart, O people, spends the night with the one

whose dream-image spends the night with me when darkness falls.

    فتُشفِقُ عيني أن تعودَ إلى السُهدِ

    All I have of meeting him is his visit in sleep;

so my eye dreads returning to sleeplessness.

In lovesick longing I yearn for one I do not see,

as a thirsty man longs for a far-off watering place.

When a breeze from his home wafts over me,

I find comfort in its greeting and its coolness.

Ah, you whose home is far away, if our homes

were as close as our two hearts, we would sleep on a restful bed.

Though the dust-gray desert plains have barred our visit,

they have not barred the south wind from visiting.
