    She came to me unveiled one morning,

    And the sway of her waist had loosened her sash.

    So I rose, having lowered my wing for her,

    And said to her, 'By your life, have you tasted wine (rāḥ)?'

    She said, 'No, by your life, I have not tasted rā.'

    Her utterance showed me pearls that glittered,

    لذلكَ أوجزَتْهُ وما أطالتْ

    But she strove to excel in it and went to extremes;

    So she shortened it and did not draw it out.

    I said, 'And why did you omit the letter ḥāʾ?' She said,

    'I fear you will smell my breath and be cured.'
