ومَضَىand departed النَزِيلُthe guest كأنَّهُas though he لمhad not يَنزِلِstayed
The abodes lie empty, as though never inhabited,
and the guest has gone, as though he had never stayed.

فإذاthen when مَضَىhe passes فكأنَّهُthen as though he لمhad not يَحصُلِexisted
And a man in his world is known to exist,
but when he passes, it is as though he had never been.

Indeed, he who filled the eyes with his companionship
has filled the hearts, as though he had never left.

and to every eye his figure appears.

O you who dwell in the noblest spot on earth,
indeed, the guest befits his dwelling.

You found none among us worthy of your stay,
so you dwelt apart in holy Jerusalem.

When you came to these abodes, they marveled
at Paul's resurrection before the Day of Assembly.

You deserve to be visited on foot
by whoever has visited the relics of ancient times.

ويَرِفُّand flutters منfrom طرَبٍdelight جَناحُthe wing الهَيكَلِof the sanctuary
All the pulpits yearn for your countenance,
and the sanctuary's wing flutters with delight.

لَكَyou have طيبُthe fragrance of أنفاسٍbreaths كَعرْفِlike the scent of المَنْدَلِaloeswood
And they spurn the scents of incense, while above them
your breath is sweet as the fragrance of aloeswood.

We offer Zion congratulations, like those who envy,
and Beirut's port condolences, like those who reproach.

Thirst blazed among the riding camels; and when
they arrived, their thirst was quenched before the watering place.

كمُسافرٍlike a traveler لكنَّهُbut he لمdid not يَعجَلِhurry
Our nights grew short, so in our home you were
like a traveler, but one who did not hurry.
والوَردُand the rose ليسَdoes not يطُولُlast long عهدُthe duration of لِقائهِmeeting it
والبدرُand the full moon ليسَis not بثابتٍfixed فيin مَنزلِa station
And an encounter with the rose does not last long,
nor does the full moon stay fixed in one station.

والناسُand people بينَamid الدهرِTime ليسَare not بأعدَلِany more just
And Time is not just among people,
nor are people, through Time, any more just.

And when you come among people, settle to one side,
and if you can live alone, then do so.
