    فالموتُ بالبابِ والأرواحُ تنتظرُ

    Awake, O servants of God, and take warning;

    for death is at the door, and souls are waiting.

    Within the flicker of an eye as it turns,

    deaths come, and hearing and sight depart.

    نَعَمْ وأفضلُ من أجسادنا الحَجْرُ

    The wind surpasses our souls in endurance;

    yes, and stone surpasses our bodies.

    وذاكَ يبقَى فلا يُمحى لهُ أثَرُ

    The former returns when its breezes blow;

    and the latter remains, its trace never erased.

    I ask God's forgiveness for time that passed in vain,

    in diversion and heedlessness, we reach evening where we began at dawn.

    We know we are strangers in the dwelling where we lodge,

    yet departure never crosses our minds.

    Your world is like a shadow play spread out,

    and people in its folds are silhouettes and images.

    We come and go, born of woman and man,

    as though neither woman nor man had ever been.

    A youth walks like a forest lion, hunting prey,

    and becomes like prey, himself brought low.

    Abd Allah was like a tower, then became

    like the dust that scatters in the wind.

    They wrapped him—alas!—enfolded in shrouds,

    as the moon is wrapped in cloud amid the darkness.

    And he passed on his bier, high in station, just as

    yesterday people had exalted his standing.

    Parting outran gray hair, snatching him away

    before gray hair and old age could overtake him.

    He sought a shorter road to his Lord,

    like a traveler seeking a nearer, shorter way.

    People received from him every benefit

    within his power; no harm was ever known of him.

    And people had a share of his wealth, for

    wealth to him was a branch that bore fruit.

    Refined in soul, in speech and deed,

    his heart kept watch over his own soul.

    إنَّ اللَّبيبَ على الأحزانِ يَصطَبِرُ

    Sons of Shuqayr, embrace patience and hold fast to it;

    for the wise man bears sorrows patiently.

    وكلُّ عبدٍ إلى مَولاهُ يبتَدِرُ

    The Lord called His servant one day, and he hastened to Him;

    and every servant hastens to his Lord.

    People direct affairs in this world, but nothing

    comes to pass there except what fate has ordained.

    And sometimes they fear what does not befall them

    there, while something other than what they feared befalls them.

    A man has, in time, a day with no evening

    he can hope to see, and a night with no dawn.

    To live, he sets aside some of his wealth in purses

    of many kinds; then wealth and purses laugh at him.

    How many a drinker has died with the cup in his hand,

    so his departure came amid his coming to drink.

    And many a bearer of news—before he could finish uttering

    a word, the news of his death had already spread.

    فَهْوَ الحياةُ التي تُرْجَى وتُعْتَبَرُ

    People were born for death, not for life;

    for it is the life that is hoped for and valued.

    Woe to our earlier days that prospered

    on earth, if our later days suffer loss!
