O travelers to the everlasting abodes,

do not build up the perishing abode of ruin.

Those abodes are the lasting dwelling, whereas

these abodes are merely way stations in the wilderness.

Woe is me! When will you wake from drunkenness without

wine, and from sleep with an unheeding eye?

If delusion has deceived you about your affairs,

then remember the fate of generations gone by.

O traveler whose path is filled with death,

beware, for you are on the brink of the abyss.

And know that you never take a step

secure against its being the fatal one.

The fool is heedless of death, imagining

that death has grown heedless of him.

People are like prey; around them

are death's messengers, like ravening wolves.

A man avoids affliction, yet how often

has one calamity missed him, only for him to meet another!

And when a gravely ill man recovers from an illness,

another besets him, from which there is no recovery.

I lament your loss, O grateful one, who never had

a complaining soul, even for a day in all your life.

O you who obeyed God's command and restrained

    rebellious souls from abandoning obedience to Him;

O you of the unblemished heart, as though it

    had been fashioned from sweet, clear waters;

and truthful in words that, through their soundness,

    led one by the forelock to right guidance;

and a sincere adviser, virtuous, loving, consistent

    in word and deed, in private and in public;

and steadfast in good conduct in your deeds,

as poetry adheres to its rhyming letter.

When God called to you from His Paradise,

you answered obediently, with a contented soul.

That resolve was but a single night old

when, on the second, you alighted in His abode.

May God pour His mercy upon you, just as

the mercies of your heart were unceasing.

No eye ever wept at any wrong from you,

yet every eye has come to weep over you.

    والرِّيحُ يَعصِفُ بالجِبالِ العاليَهْ

    A lofty mountain, shaken by the wind of fate;

and the wind rages against the lofty mountains.

A wind in which a yellow hue was imagined

by one who thought it held the blaze of a scorching fire.

It is the quintessence of all diseases together,

like the Khulasa drawn from the verses of the Kafiya.

Were you to draw, in terms of its effects,

a comparison with it, it would be the sea, and they the irrigation channel.

    Curse it—what a murderous blow,

at whose impact bleeding head wounds multiplied!

It slew him; yet perhaps it offered us its excuse,

since it had not struck the cornerstone.

You are the one I mean; I need not name you,

your ample qualities spare me the need of your name.

And if you are spared, you are a sun that suffices

in place of the light of all the stars now hidden.
