رسالةُ فاضلٍ وَرَدتْ فكانتْ

أحَبَّ إليَّ من تُحفِ الهَدايا

A message from the noble one arrived

It was dearer to me than gifts of honor

أبانَتْ عن مَوَدَّتهِ صريحاً

وعمَّا فيهِ من كَرَم السَّجايا

It openly expressed his cordiality

And the generosity of his noble traits

فَضَضتُ خِتامها فلِقيتُ منهُ

لطائفَ أبرزَتْ سعدَ الخَبايا

I opened its seal and found in it

Subtleties that revealed the joys of secrets

وأبدَى طَيُّها سِرّاً بديعاً

يُنادي كم خَبايا في الزوايا

And its cover revealed an exquisite mystery

Calling out how many secrets in the corners

لئنْ تَكُ غيرَ صادقةٍ بمدحي

لقد صَدَقَتْ بإخلاصِ الطَّوايا

If you are not truthful in praising me

You were truthful in the sincerity of guesses

وحقَّ لهُ الثَّناءُ على صِفاتٍ

فَضائلها مُسلَّمةُ القَضايا

And it is his right to be praised for traits

Whose merits are undisputed facts

أنا كالآلِ يُحسَبُ عينَ ماءٍ

فتَتَّخِذُ العِطاشُ لهُ الرَّوايا

I am like a mirage deemed to be water

Wherein the thirsty have high hopes

وقد يُغني التَّوهُّمُ عن يقينٍ

وحُسنُ الصِّيتِ عن حُسن المزايا

And imagination may substitute certainty

And good reputation for good qualities

مَضَى مَن كان للتَّقريظ أهلاً

وأدبَرَ كُلُّ طَلاّع الثَّنايا

He who deserved praise is gone

And every emerging star has set

وقد عاد التُرابُ إلى تُرابٍ

وأصبحَتِ المُنَى بيَدِ المَنايا

And dust has returned to dust

As death has claimed the final home

أتى مَن قبلنا دُنياهُ بِكراً

فأدرَكَ عندها بِكْرَ العَطايا

Those before us got the life's goodness early

And at it found the prime of gifts

فكان القومُ في الدُّنيا ملوكاً

ونحن اليومَ من بعضِ الرَّعايا

So those people were kings in this world

While we are today some of the subjects
