Indeed, your two eyes have been accused of sorcery.

I drank, not knowing the cup, until

I grew drunk and could not comprehend it.

In a heart where none but you has dwelt.

It strives to have patience dwell within it,

But there is no room for it there.

Ah, you who slay me deliberately with a glance,

I see my deliberate acts fall short of your unintended ones.

When the sword's point enforces a judgment,

The jugular's arguments become feeble before it.

    وما بَلَغَ المَشيبَ فقد عصاكا

    Gray hair forbade me a long-held habit;

Yet gray hair has achieved nothing, for he has defied you.

So when you forbade him to give, he forbade you.

The customary favors of the house of Raslan, which,

Like their inborn nature, refuse to be parted,

Grew up in Isma'il's lap, until

Al-Amin called them, and they said, ‘Here you are!’

I found you the root of the great tree of Qays's clan,

Though you are its branch, as we behold you.

A noble man may emerge unique,

Though his birth suggests to you a shared lineage.

Through which heaven's water has watered your soil.

If the Bedouins have acknowledged your merit,

The non-Arabs have acknowledged enough to content you.

These days have become a clear draught for you,

But only after they struck your hard rock.

The most concerned of men in any matter,

Yet the least confused of men in that same matter.

    وجاوَزتَ النّظيرَ فما تُحاكى

    You were first to noble deeds, so you imitate no one;

You surpassed your peer, so none can imitate you.

You stood upon a straight path,

As though what is behind you lay before your eyes.

You cast it, and it did not miss al-Simak.

Your brother by blood you have lost today.

If a spare fold of your cloak shelters him.

From the patience dwelling in your breast.

    فتصغُرُ أن يهيج لها بكاكا

    And you care nothing for deaths;

They are too small to stir your tears.

If the nights have laid a snare for you,

They have not severed even your sandal-thong.

And your staff cleaves the sword of their valor.

    سَهِرْتَ لهم ونامُوا في حِماكا

    People have been inventive in praising you;

You kept vigil for them while they slept in your protection.

For your enemies have testified to its truth.

His father never forsook your father.

And your judgment does not permit its disposal.

A heritage we claim; however long

Time passes over it, it fears no destruction.

Who have the flock's right in equal measure.

You spread bounty that was seas,

And they spread service that was nets.

I saw you in the dark, a rain-bringing star,

And could not distinguish your earth from your sky.

When I travel, hope in you is my provision,

And wherever I alight, your banner shades me.
