ياO أرضَland of بيروتَBeirut بُشرَاناglad tidings for us وبُشراكِand glad tidings for you
يا أرضَ بيروتَ بُشرَانا وبُشراكِ
لقدindeed أتىhas come اليومَtoday مَوْلاناour lord ومَوْلاكِand your lord
لقد أتى اليومَ مَوْلانا ومَوْلاكِ
O land of Beirut, glad tidings for us and for you!
Indeed, today our lord and yours has come.
منfrom أرضِناour land رحمةُthe mercy of اللهGod الكريمِthe Generous أتىhas come
من أرضِنا رحمةُ الله الكريمِ أتى
معwith فَيْضِthe outpouring of رحمتهِHis mercy منfrom عُلْوِthe heights of أفلاكِcelestial spheres
مع فَيْضِ رحمتهِ من عُلْوِ أفلاكِ
From our land has come the mercy of God the Generous,
with the outpouring of His mercy from the heights of the celestial spheres.
قدindeed فتحَhas opened الخِصْبُfertility عينَthe eye of الزَّهرِthe flowers حاكِيةًimitating
قد فتحَ الخِصْبُ عينَ الزَّهرِ حاكِيةً
زُهْرَthe bright ones of النُّجومِthe stars وكانَand was الفضلُsuperiority للحاكيfor the imitator
زُهْرَ النُّجومِ وكانَ الفضلُ للحاكي
Fertility has opened the flowers' eye, imitating
the radiant stars—and the imitator proved superior.
فليسَso there is no منany نائحٍmourner غيرَexcept الحَمامِthe doves ولاand no
فليسَ من نائحٍ غيرَ الحَمامِ ولا
غيرَexcept السَّحائِبِthe clouds فيin أقطارناour lands باكِweeper
غيرَ السَّحائِبِ في أقطارنا باكِ
So none mourns but the doves, nor
does any weep in our lands but the clouds.
زارَvisited الوزيرُthe minister حِماكِyour domain اليومَtoday منعطِفاًshowing kindness
زارَ الوزيرُ حِماكِ اليومَ منعطِفاً
وحَلَّand settled كالرُّوحِlike the soul فيin جسمٍa body فأحياكِand so revived you
وحَلَّ كالرُّوحِ في جسمٍ فأحياكِ
The minister visited your domain today in kindness,
and settled like the soul in a body, reviving you.
الرَّاشِدُthe rightly guided الماجدُthe illustrious المرفوعُexalted مَنصِبُهُhis rank
الرَّاشِدُ الماجدُ المرفوعُ مَنصِبُهُ
والصَّائِبُand sound الحُكمِin judgment عنfrom عِلمٍknowledge وإدراكِand insight
والصَّائِبُ الحُكمِ عن عِلمٍ وإدراكِ
The rightly guided, the illustrious, whose rank is exalted,
and sound in judgment through knowledge and insight.
هذاthis الذيthe one who تَظلِمُwrongs الأموالَwealth راحتُهُhis palm
هذا الذي تَظلِمُ الأموالَ راحتُهُ
وعدلُهُand his justice يُنصِفُgives redress to المَظلومَthe wronged والشَّاكيand the complainant
وعدلُهُ يُنصِفُ المَظلومَ والشَّاكي
This is he whose palm does injustice to wealth,
while his justice grants redress to the wronged and the complainant.
ماضيkeen الحُسامِof blade بسيفِwith the sword of اللهِGod منتقمٌtaking vengeance
ماضي الحُسامِ بسيفِ اللهِ منتقمٌ
منon كلِّevery طاغٍtyrant شديدِfierce in البأسِbattle فتَّاكِmurderous
من كلِّ طاغٍ شديدِ البأسِ فتَّاكِ
Keen of blade, with God's sword he takes vengeance
on every tyrant, fierce in battle and murderous.
ذكاؤُهُhis intelligence مثلَlike نورِthe light of الشَّمسِthe sun مُتَّقِدٌablaze
ذكاؤُهُ مثلَ نورِ الشَّمسِ مُتَّقِدٌ
وذكرُهُand his renown مِثلُlike عَرْفِthe scent of العَنبَرِambergris الذَّاكيstrongly fragrant
وذكرُهُ مِثلُ عَرْفِ العَنبَرِ الذَّاكي
His intelligence blazes like the light of the sun,
and his renown is like the scent of fragrant ambergris.
رحيبُbroad صَدْرٍof breast تضيعُare lost النَّائباتُcalamities بهِwithin him
رحيبُ صَدْرٍ تضيعُ النَّائباتُ بهِ
كالبحرِlike the sea يَسبَحُswim فيهin it بعضُsome أسماكِfish
كالبحرِ يَسبَحُ فيه بعضُ أسماكِ
His breast is broad; calamities are lost within it,
like the sea, in which some fish swim.
إذاwhen التَقتهُmeet him خُطوبُthe calamities of الدَّهرِtime عابِسةًfrowning
إذا التَقتهُ خُطوبُ الدَّهرِ عابِسةً
لاقَىhe meets الخُطوبَthe calamities بوجهٍwith a face مِنهُof his ضَحَّاكِever-laughing
لاقَى الخُطوبَ بوجهٍ مِنهُ ضَحَّاكِ
When time's calamities confront him with a frown,
he meets those calamities with a laughing face.
يَرعَىhe tends الأهاليthe people كأولادٍlike children مكرَّمَةٍcherished
يَرعَى الأهالي كأولادٍ مكرَّمَةٍ
لهُof his ويحَميand protects أراضيهاtheir lands كأملاكِlike estates
لهُ ويحَمي أراضيها كأملاكِ
He tends the people like cherished children
of his, and protects their lands as his own estates.
وللصديقِand for a friend التِفاتٌconsideration مِنfrom صَداقَتِهِhis friendship
وللصديقِ التِفاتٌ مِن صَداقَتِهِ
إلاّexcept لدَىwhen حُكمِruling on تسريحٍdismissal وإمساكِand retention
إلاّ لدَى حُكمِ تسريحٍ وإمساكِ
And he shows a friend the consideration friendship brings,
except when ruling on dismissal and retention.
ياO أرضَland of سُوريَّةَSyria المسعودَfortunate طالِعُهاher rising star
يا أرضَ سُوريَّةَ المسعودَ طالِعُها
حَمْداًpraise وشُكراًand thanks فإنَّfor indeed اللهَGod أعطاكِhas given to you
حَمْداً وشُكراً فإنَّ اللهَ أعطاكِ
O land of Syria, whose rising star is blessed,
give praise and thanks, for God has bestowed His gifts on you.
وياand O عشائرُtribes باسمِin the name of اللهGod مَنزِلُكمyour dwelling
ويا عشائرُ باسمِ الله مَنزِلُكم
وياand O قوافِلُcaravans باسمِin the name of اللهِGod مَجراكِyour course
ويا قوافِلُ باسمِ اللهِ مَجراكِ
And O tribes, in God's name be your dwelling,
and O caravans, in God's name be your passage.
