Time bestowed a blessing in charity,

so I thanked it for its blessing, yet could not believe it.

O blessing that overflowed upon me—I was mistaken; rather,

it embraced all who dwell in the East.

    حقٌّ على أخشابها أن تُورِقا

    A ship bore us glad tidings of joy;

its timbers ought rightly to put forth leaves.

Indeed, that pleased me more than loading it

with pearls until it nearly sank.

O cornerstone of the clan, do not leave

the fortified tower torn apart when you are gone.

I would never be content to live on if, one day,

they said, 'So-and-so has passed away; may you live on.'

O port of Beirut, smile, beaming with joy,

and let the woodland trees rejoice, clapping.

And let the mighty deeps dance around her

for joy, and let her river overflow, surging forth.

And let the fertile earth don fine silk,

green, and let her blossoms don rich brocade.

And the spirits of the breezes trail above her

a train of fragrant, unsealed musk.

He has returned, at whose arrival words rejoiced

in rapture, and eloquence has congratulated speech.

Do not tell the pages of him, for perhaps

they will shed the ink's blackness for joy at the reunion.

Whoever lives in the world of trials is always

    shifting between happiness and misery.

Around us, it is water and mud; consider, then:

can one who wades between them hope for purity?
