مَنwhoever عاشَlives فيon الأرضِthe earth لاnot يخلوis free منof الكَمَدِgrief
علىover أبٍa father أوor أخٍa brother قدhas ماتdied أوor وَلدِa child
Whoever lives on earth is never free of grief
For a father or brother who has died, or a child.
لاno بدَّescape للحيِّfor the living منfrom حُزنٍsorrow علىover أحَدٍsomeone
حتىuntil يَموتَdies فلاso does not يبكيweep علىover أحَدِanyone
The living must feel sorrow for someone,
Until they die, and so weep for no one.
وكلُّand every حيٍّliving being لهُfor it يومٌa day يموتُdies بهِon it
فيفرُغُand so runs out العُمرُlife مهماhowever much زادَit lengthens فيin المُدَدِspans of time
And every living being has a day on which it dies,
And life runs out, however long its span.
وأهوَنُand the gentlest الموتِdeath ماthat which وافىcomes علىat صِغَرٍa young age
فإنهُfor it is راحةٌrest للرُّوحِfor the soul والجَسَدِand the body
And the gentlest death is that which comes in childhood,
For it is rest for the soul and body.
لاno بُدَّescape للطُرْقِfor the roads منfrom زادٍprovisions يُعَدُّare prepared سِوَىexcept
طُرْقِthe roads الصِّغارِof children إلىto مُستَوطَنِthe abode الأبَدِof eternity
All roads require provisions to be prepared, except
The children's roads to the abode of eternity.
يكونُis منwhoever عاشَlives مُرتاحاًat ease بلاwithout تَعَبٍtoil
منهمْamong them ومنand whoever ماتَdies مسروراًhappy بلاwithout نَكَدِdistress
At ease, without toil, is whoever lives
Among them; and whoever dies is happy, without distress.
ليستis not منof الموتِdeath تَخلوis free لحظةٌa moment فنَرىso we see
بهِbecause of it الحزانَىthe mourners كرملِlike the sand of البحرthe sea فيin العَدَدِnumber
Not a moment is free of death, so we see
Those it saddens as numerous as the sands of the sea.
وكُلَّand every يومٍday دموعٌtears منهُfrom it لوif جُمِعَتْwere gathered
كانتwould be غديراًa pool كثيرَabundant in الموجِwaves والزَّبدِand foam
And every day, the tears it causes, if gathered,
Would form a pool full of waves and foam.
كمhow many حسرَةٍa heartache نَزَلَتdescended فيinto القبرِthe grave معwith رجلٍa man
قدhas ماتَdied منهاfrom it جريحَwounded in القلبِthe heart والكَبِدِand the liver
How many a heartache has descended to the grave with a man
Who died of it, wounded in heart and liver.
وكمand how many دموعٍtears جَرَتflowed منfrom عينthe eye of مُنتَحِبٍone who sobs
لمdid not تَستَفِدْgain عينُهُhis eye منهاfrom them سِوَىexcept الرَّمدِeye inflammation
And how many tears have flowed from a sobbing mourner's eye,
Yet his eye gained nothing from them but inflammation.
إذاif ابتُلِيتَyou are afflicted بأمرٍwith something لاnot تُطيقُyou are able لهُfor it
دفعاًwarding off فبالصَّبرِthen with patience عالجهُtreat it ولاand do not تَزِدِadd more
If you are afflicted by something you cannot
Ward off, treat it with patience, and do no more.
ولوand even if بذلتَyou spent كنوزَthe treasures of الأرضِthe earth قاطبةًall together
تبغيyou seek علاجاًa remedy بغيرother than الصَّبرِpatience لمwould not تَجِدِfind
And even if you spent all the treasures of the earth,
Seeking a remedy other than patience, you would find none.
