Her people's gazelle, she is skittish,

and skittishness brings gazelles no shame.

    فيسلَمُ كاشحٌ ويُصابُ جارُ

    With her two eyes she makes her lover's blood forfeit;

so a foe escapes unharmed, while a neighbor is struck.

Her home stands where the two tribes meet,

yet she neither visits nor is visited.

Her roots lie among the noble Arabs,

yet there is neither covenant nor neighborly protection.

If one day she raises the banner of war,

then the very cores of hearts are dust to her.

Among Rabi'a she tells of Kulayb,

through her proud might, and Nizar hears her.

When coquetry toys with her sides,

dignity intervenes to check its sway.

On her cheek are anemones; there has appeared

amid their redness a green tinge of myrtle.

Those, then, are al-Nu'man's anemones; neither

hand nor eye is turned upon them.

She shows us live coals in a smooth cheek,

and her glances take even the pebbles captive.
