No being endures in this world, nor any trace,

As long as the sun and moon rise within it.

Experience leaves us a tale here in its wake,

For a time; then that tale passes away.

The world's glitter and splendor have deceived them.

How fine the branches, but how wretched the fruit!

She is beloved; in love with her every youth spends the night,

Lost in passion, while the old man will not turn away from her.

And buries remembrance with him where he digs the grave.

People stumble beneath the wing of night,

In ignorance—woe to them when dawn appears!

Not an hour passes without saying to them:

O people, arise! The journey draws near.

For destruction, sparing nothing and leaving nothing?

Every day it shows us lessons among humankind,

But without awakening, lessons bring no benefit.

Alas, no companion in this world—oh, sorrow!—

Endures, nor does any lover have his desire fulfilled.

Abd al-Hamid has died today, cut off

From us, as God's decree and fate have willed.

And half my heart has departed, leaving it rent apart.

If the honey of union with him has eluded me, I have

Resigned myself to patience—but how can I endure?

The dearest thing to my eye, when I remember him,

Is tears; and what it finds sweetest is sleeplessness.

This is the friend whose affection was

Like sweet al-Kawthar, untouched by murk.

Pure of heart, unalloyed in love: no flattery

Was in his speech—no, nor any stain in his heart.

Neither the horizon's full moons nor moneybags dazzle him.

While litanies and surahs have folded away his night.

The earth's nomads and townsfolk attest his excellence.

Rhymed verse weeps for him, and pages, and the

Pens, and splendid orations, and evening talk.

No wonder if his death has saddened al-Zawra,

For grief for him upon Lebanon has its weight.

And if the River of Peace has eluded him, then in

The Abode of Peace rivers gush forth for him.

He has gone to God—may God greet his countenance

With honors, and may rain greet his soil.

If my heart ever forgets him while I live, I shall have

Committed in love a sin that cannot be forgiven.

May parting never prosper! How keen its striking edges!

Like lightning, its flashing snatches sight away.

From us indiscriminately, then goes on, still needy.

To a life awaited in the Abode of Eternity.

So neither going to water nor returning is sweet to us.

    فليسَ تَنفكُّ عن تأريخها الغُمَرُ

    Whenever one flood of trouble subsides, its companions rise;

For such floods never leave life's history.
