الشمسُthe sun والبدرُand the full moon فيin أُفقِthe horizon العُلىglory افتَرَقاthey both parted
الشمسُ والبدرُ في أُفقِ العُلى افتَرَقا
وههناand here اجتمَعَاthey both came together للنَّاسِfor the people فيin دارِa house
وههنا اجتمَعَا للنَّاسِ في دارِ
The sun and the full moon parted on the horizon of glory;
The sun and the moon in the horizon parted
And here they came together for the people in one house.
And here they met for the people in the house
شمسٌa sun عَلَتْrose high عنbeyond كُسوفٍa solar eclipse أَنْthat يُلِمَّmight come بهاupon it
شمسٌ عَلَتْ عن كُسوفٍ أَنْ يُلِمَّ بها
وبدرُand a full moon تِمٍّfullness علاrose high عنbeyond خَسفِlunar eclipse أقمارِmoons
وبدرُ تِمٍّ علا عن خَسفِ أقمارِ
A sun too exalted for an eclipse to touch it,
A sun that rose above an eclipse that would touch it
And a full moon exalted above the eclipses of moons.
And a full moon ascended above the eclipse of moons
فَرعٌa branch علىto أَصلِهِits root دَلَّتpointed شمائِلُهُits virtues
فَرعٌ على أَصلِهِ دَلَّت شمائِلُهُ
والأَصلُand the root نَعرِفهُwe know it منfrom طِيبِgoodness أَثمارِfruits
والأَصلُ نَعرِفهُ من طِيبِ أَثمارِ
A branch whose virtues have revealed its root;
A branch on its origin, its features showed
And we know the root by the goodness of its fruits.
And we know the origin by the good fruits
سِرٌّa secret سَرَىflowed منfrom أبيهِhis father فيهِin him مُندرِجاًembedded
سِرٌّ سَرَى من أبيهِ فيهِ مُندرِجاً
فيin نفسِهِhis soul كَدَمٍlike blood فيin جِسمِهِhis body سارِflowing
في نفسِهِ كَدَمٍ في جِسمِهِ سارِ
A secret flowed from his father into him, embedded
A secret that flowed from his father embedded in him
In his soul, like blood coursing through his body.
In his soul like blood in his body it flowed
أعطاهُgave him مولاهُhis Lord منof فضلٍbounty علىdespite صِغَرٍyouth
أعطاهُ مولاهُ من فضلٍ على صِغَرٍ
ماwhat ليسَnot تُعطَىare given شُيوخٌelders ذاتُpossessing أدهارِages
ما ليسَ تُعطَى شُيوخٌ ذاتُ أدهارِ
His Lord, in His bounty, gave him despite his youth
His Master gave him from grace in his youth
What elders of many years are not given.
What is not given to elders of eras
مواهبُgifts النَّاسِpeople مِثلَlike النَّاسِpeople باطلةٌvain
مواهبُ النَّاسِ مِثلَ النَّاسِ باطلةٌ
فلاso no عَطيَّةَgift إلاَّexcept مِنْحةُgrant الباريthe Creator
فلا عَطيَّةَ إلاَّ مِنْحةُ الباري
People's gifts, like people themselves, are vain;
The people's gifts are like people, worthless
So there is no gift but the Creator's grant.
So no gift except the Giver of gifts
