Do not lose heart at calamity, and know
that fortitude withstands affliction.

then they have salves in gracious patience.

And if today, amid affliction, I refuse to endure
willingly, tomorrow I shall endure, my nose humbled in the dust.

The loss of the beloved is a calamity; its equal,
the lover's sorrow, lays every heart to waste.

If I had, in his living forever,
any hope, then endless sorrow for him would be justified.

Indeed, the stranger is surely resolved to depart.

A long journey along a trackless road:
the departed never returns, and the newcomer departs.

A master is driven toward it like a servant;
No escape! Everyone is a servant of death.

by any calamity; beside it, great woes count for nothing.

through whom calamity was averted and the oppressor repelled.

We weep over the loss of the beloved, and just as
the beloved was lost, so streaming tears are wasted.

The sorrowful man hurts his eyelids with his tears
in vain, as the remorseful man bites his fingertips.
