الفضلُmerit منfrom أهلِpeople of الكرامةِhonor يُعرَفُis recognized
بالفعلِby action لاnot بالقَولِby speech مِمَّنfrom one who يَهرِفُprattles
Merit in people of honor is recognized
By deeds, not by words from one who prattles.
والجودُand generosity فيin بعضِsome الكِرامِnoble people طبيعةٌan innate disposition
رَسختْhas taken root وفيand in بعضِsome الكِرامِnoble people تَكلُّفُaffectation
And generosity in some noble people is an instinct,
Deeply rooted; in others it is an affectation.
كَرَمُgenerosity اللِّسانِthe tongue خديعةٌdeception فيin طيِّهاits folds
كَذِبٌfalsehood يُعابُis reproached بهِfor it وبُخلٌand miserliness يُقذَفُis reviled
Generosity of the tongue is deceit, hiding in its folds
Falsehood that brings reproach, and miserliness that draws scorn.

If there were any benefit in pleasant speech,
I would have amassed from it wealth beyond description.
المالُwealth يُزريbrings disgrace بالبخيلِupon the miser للُؤمِهِfor his baseness
حِرْصاًout of greed ولكنand yet للكريمِfor the generous person يشرِّفُbrings honor
Wealth disgraces the miser for his baseness
And greed, but brings honor to the generous.
إنَّindeed الغَنِيَّthe wealthy man إذاwhen قضَىfulfills حقَّthe due الغِنَىwealth
يَقضيpays الغِنَيwealth حَقَّthe due الغَنِيِّthe wealthy man فيُنصِفُand so does justice
Indeed, when the wealthy man fulfills wealth's due,
Wealth pays the wealthy man his due and does him justice.
لوif قُلتَyou said للكَرَمِto generosity المصفَّىpure منwhom تُرَىI wonder

If you asked pure generosity, 'Whom, I wonder,
Do you call your father?' it would reply, 'Say: O Yusuf!'

This is the man who regards, among his wealth,
An unspent dirham as ill fortune for himself.

His Creator gave him perfection, so you will not see
In him any flaw for which he could be rebuked.

His innate nature was made for doing good, just as
Letters were made for composing speech.
ياO مَنone who يَرَىregards سَبْقpreceding السؤَالِa request عطاءَهُhis gift
عاراًa disgrace عليهِupon him يَصُدُّturns away عنهُfrom it ويأنفُand disdains
O you who regard a request preceding your gift
As a disgrace to you, shunning it and scorning it.

وتعلَّمواand learn منهُfrom him ولاand do not تَستنكْفواbe too proud
Indeed, I say to those who envy you: reflect,
And learn from him; do not be too proud.
