The beloved is gone; so, O remnant of life, melt away

In grief for him; and O tears, answer.

I raised him for parting, until it came to him

In the dark of night, snatching him away like a wolf.

    O grieving mother, show grace

In patience, for patience is the best physician.

Do not cast off the robe of mourning, and maintain

A lament for him befitting the one mourned.

This is the tender bough that was struck

By fate's arrow and died, withered.

Who will attend to writing and reckoning after him,

And to sound planning and training?

I am not ashamed to have said: few were his equals

Among men, for I am not mistaken.

And a man gives his tongue free rein in speech

If he has no fear of being contradicted.

Indeed, I stood beside his grave,

Watering its earth with my poured-out tears.

And indeed I wrote for him upon its sides:

Oh, my anguish at that inscription!

Yours, O tomb, are reverence and love

From me, for you have enclosed my beloved.
